The sky was so clear that Alix could swear that she could see every distant planet in the galaxy. It was breathtaking, beautiful, magical, even. "I'm so glad we came here." She murmured quietly to herself as she laid back on her surfboard. The light blue board floated quietly on top of the ocean's current. Her black bikini the only thing that clad the young woman's body. Her right ankle laid crossed over the other as her arms rest on her stomach.

Slowly, the calm smile that appeared on Alix's lips slowly turned into a small frown. She and her best friend Sorscha had come here to celebrate, but tonight was there last night, and there was still so much for them to do in this seaside town. To be honest, Alix never wanted to leave. She wanted to stay here forever. Slowly, Alix moved to sit up straight on her board, her legs slowly dipping into the cool water. Then, a sudden tug pulled on her right leg, pulling Alix under.

    --

The young Prince of Nautilin stood on his balcony, his eyes looking over the city from his high vantage point. His arms crossed behind his back as an uneasy feeling took him over. Something didn't seem right. "I feel like the sea isn't happy." Lorcan mused to himself as he glanced upwards towards where the air breathers dwelled. Ripples in their night light did little to darken the underwater world, but still, cast an ominous shadow on the Kingdom.

"Brother!" Lorcan called out as he turned from his balcony and headed out of his room and into the hall of the palace. The younger of the two Princes looked for the slightly older one, slight annoyance seeping into Lance's tone as he couldn't find his brother as fast as he would of likes. "Lance!" He called out once more, then halted in his steps as he laid eyes on the blonde haired man. "Do you feel that?" Lorcan asked, as soon as his brother was in earshot to not have to yell at to be heard. "Something is happening, the sea is not happy." He told his brother, knowing that it meant their people might be in danger.

Sorscha was relaxing on her on board near Alix. She nodded in agreement. “Yeah, I don’t want to leave,” she admitted. She wished that there was more than just this last day before they had to go home and face the fact that they will have to get ready for college. She looked at the sky, trying to relax. The world seemed somewhat at peace around her.

When Alix was pulled of her board, Sorscha let out a gasp and sat up. Her feet sinking in the water. Then she felt a tug on them and pulling her into the water as well. She started choking on water and tried to fight to get back to the surface. She just kept getting dragged down further.

    ***

Lance looked at his brother and then went closer trying to get a closer look at what was causing the commotion. “Lorcan, it’s two humans drowning,” he said. He didn’t wait for his brother to catch up. He was about to let humans drown in the sea. He didn’t like getting close to humans, but he wasn’t cruel. He swam as fast as he could going straight toward the one that was further down.

Her light brown hair covered her face, but he knew she was trying to get back the surface. He took a hold of her and started to swim her to the surface. He hoped that his brother would get the other fast enough. Lance worried that he couldn’t get the girl he had to the surface soon enough.

Panic was the first thing that Alix felt as she felt the sudden rush of water all around her. Her bright green eyes widening as she looked up towards the surface. It was getting further and further from her as she was being dragged down. Doing her best to hold her breath, Alix glanced down into the dark water to see that there was nothing pulling her down, which was on and only added to why she started to move her limbs wildly. She needed air, she could feel her body craving it.

Then, it was like a miracle. Something filled her finish before pulling her up towards the surface. Alix's legs moved with the mysterious entity before darkness slowly inched it's way into Alix's eyes and her slowly past out.

    --

"Humans?" Lorcan repeated, not believing his brother's word. Humans wouldn't have upset the sea so much. They've lived in secrecy for more than a thousand years. How in the world could they have caused the tides to lash out? "Lance!" Lorcan called out to his brother, quickly moving to swim after his brother to stop him. To allow for nature to take its course and let the human's fates be decided by the sea. To allow for the spirits of the ocean to claim what they want to claim.

It didn't work like that though, as it seemed that Lorcan's idiot brother had other ideas. A scowl appearing on the younger Prince's lips as he watched Lance rescue one of the girls. Which meant that he had to rescue the other one, which he did as soon as he got close to her. Wrapping his arms around her waist and helping her swim to the surface as fast as he could.

Lance noticed that the girl had passed out. When he reached the surface, he looked for the closest piece of land. He swam as fast as he could. It was a little island. He had noticed tourists come here for the mainland, but it was big todo more than soak up the sun and have a little picnic. He pulled up to the surface and laid her out.

Lance tried to get her to breath. He placed his hands on her chest and pressed down, trying to get her lungs to working. He didn't want to press to hard and hurt ribs, but he was determined to get her lungs to working. He started to worry when it took awhile for her to cough of water.

    --

Sorscha felt the water burn down her throat. She tried to kick her feet free of whatever it was that had a hold on her, but it didn't work. It seemed that not matter what she tried to do nothing worked. Whatever had a strong hold of her and wasn't about to let go. She looked down and couldn't see what it was that had a hold of her.

By some sort of miracle, she felt something else grab ahold of her and pull her up to the surface. She tried to get a good look at whatever it was that was now pulling her back to the surface. She passed out before she could.

Everything came in a rush, the sudden sound of the waves lapping at the sand, the feeling of something pressing against her chest. On one particular hard press, Alix started to cough. Water coming up her throat and through her nose as it moved its way out of her airways. Turning to her side, Alix coughed a few more times, water pouring out of her mouth as she got it out of her system.

Then, a small groan escaped from the young girl as she wiped the water from her nose and mouth. Her bright green eyes narrowing slightly at the strange man to was next to her. "Did you save me?" She asked quietly, her voice raspy from the burn of the water.

    --

A small groan escaped from Lorcan as he noticed that the young woman in his arms had fallen unconscious. 'Damn humans and their weak lungs.' He thought to himself as he followed after his brother. Lorcan used his strong muscles to drag the young human onto the edge of the sand. His steps were heavy as he tried to move as quickly as he could before he laid the girl down gently.

"Hey, wake up." He said calmly and then gently patted her right cheek a few times. Then, he started to press on her chest as he tried to get her to cough up some of the water. Careful to not do mouth to mouth fore if their lips were to touch then she'd be gifted the ability to breathe underwater like them.

Lance looked at her and nodded. “Yeah, I did,” he admitted. He didn’t know how to react to her, seeing her up close and not a little blue from the lack of oxygen. She was beautiful, and he knew that he shouldn’t think that. He wasn’t supposed to be attracted to a human. It just wasn’t okay. He decided not to focus on that.

“Are you starting to feel better?” he asked. He knew that she was probably choking on the water still, and if he kissed her, she would be able to handle it easier. He just wasn’t going to do it. She was just a human that shouldn’t have seen him. Lance wondered what the sea had wanted with these two. There was always a reason why it took someone or brought people together.

Sorscha started to cough. Water came rushing out of her mouth as she continued to cough, feeling like she was hacking up a lung. She looked over at the man who had saved her. The man’s dirty blond hair was sucked to his head and he had thick arms that were pulling away from her. She looked at his dazzling blue eyes.

“You saved me,” she said. She didn’t know how to thank him. He looked as if he hadn’t wanted to, and yet for some reason he did. She reached out and touched his arm, squeezing a little. “Thank you,” she said. Her voice was hoarse from the water and the coughing. She sat up to get a closer look at him.

The movement was sudden, so sudden in fact that it kinda surprised Alix. She had moved so quickly, that she hadn't realized that she had practically jumped at the man and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. Her face buried into the man's shoulder. "Thank you, thank you, thank you." Alix chanted out, her voice quiet as well as muffled by his shoulder.

"I'm alive because of you," Alix mumbled as she pulled away from him slightly, keeping her hands on his shoulders. "Y-yeah, a little." She said quietly as she looked into the man's beautiful ocean blue eyes. Her lungs still burned from the water that still resided in them, but the fact that she was alive pushed away that discomfort.

    --

As soon as the girl started to come around, Lorcan pulled away. He wasn't sure if this human was going to attack him or something. Being taught from a young age that humans were dangerous creatures, Lorcan knew that he needed to be wary. For even an ill human could inflict a vast amount of pain onto those around them. "You don't need to thank me." He told her, his eyes narrowing slightly.

On a closer look, the female was quite attractive, her two different colored eyes were interesting to look at as well. "Are you able to breathe now?" He asked, not sure what else to say to the human girl at this time. "What's your name anyways?" He asked, being a little blunt with the human girl.

Lance felt shocked by the hug. He didn’t know what to do or what to say. He slowly hugged her back. “You don’t need to thank me,” he said. This was the last thing that he had expected from this human girl. Well, that’s a lie. He could have expected it, but he didn’t want to admit that he liked her arms wrapped around his neck.

“So what’s your name?” Lance asked. He pulled back slowly to look at her. He knew that he shouldn’t allow himself to enjoy the feel of her body up against his body. Yet, he knew that he was going to be thinking about her for a long while.

Sorscha looked and him and nodded. “Yeah, I’m breathing now. Thank you,” she said, ignoring his comment about not needing to thank him. He was her savior. She leaned up and kissed his cheek. “Seriously, I’m alive because of you. I owe you big time.” She looked at him as she pulled back. She didn’t know if he liked her kissing him even on the cheek it was just natural.

“I’m Sorscha,” she answered. She looked at him trying figure him out. He didn’t seem to like being near her, but he hadn’t pulled back when she had kissed him. She didn’t know if she should put this much thought in his actions. “What’s your name?”

"No, I really do," Alix said as she shook her head slightly, not wanting this to seem like no big deal. "I swear, there was something pulling me under if you weren't around. Then, I'd probably be dead." She told him., her tone hinting at how scared she was at the thought of dying.

Then, the edges of her lips slightly flinched upwards. "It's Alix." She told him. "And you are?" She asked, her voice quiet as she examined the face of the man who had saved her. He was quite handsome, but, something was a little off about him. First was because she always knew when there was a cute guy around, and secondly, there was no one else out besides her and her friend.

    --

Slowly, Lorcan's lips moved into a pursed line. He hadn't figured that this girl would kiss his cheek, it was way too intimate with a human. A mermaid would have been another story though, a human was just weird. They were enemies. "Lorcan," Lorcan said as he slowly moved to stand up and took a few steps away from her.

"Can you stand?" He asked, hoping that the answer was yes so he could tell her to move towards the docks so she could try and get help. If she was to weak still, then he had no idea what to do, as there's no way he wanted to swim with her towards the human settlement. That place just reeked of pollution and irresponsibility.

"I'm Lance," he said, giving her small smile. He knew that the more he talked to the more he would become familiar with her, and he honestly didn't want that. He looked at trying to figure what to do. He kind of hoped that she would be able to stand up and go to the docks on her own. As much as he was enjoying her presence, he knew better.

He thought over her words. The sea had pulled her down, but when he got ahold of her, the sea didn't give him any kind of resistance. If the sea had wanted her, then he wouldn't have been able to get her to the surface so easily. He looked over at his brother who looked completely at a loss to the girl he had helped.

    ***

Sorscha looked at Lorcan. "I, uh... I'm not sure. I think I need a second, Lorcan," she said. Her legs still felt like jello. She looked at him and wondered why he seemed at a loss to her. Then she looked at him closer and knew that there was something a little off about him. She reached out to touch his face, but he had backed off this time.

"Is there something wrong with me?" Sorscha asked, immediately thinking it was her fault. She dropped her arm and looked down at her hands. She always felt like she didn't fit in and that she only had Alix most of the time. She knew it wasn't quite true, but it still hit her every once in a while. She slowly tried to stand, but with her legs so wobbly she felt herself falling back over.

"Lance," Alix repeated, testing his name on her lips. Then, slowly smiled, she liked the name and it seemed to suit him quite well. Then, she slowly shifted her gaze towards the guy who had helped her friend. He looked a little similar to Lance, but Alix didn't want to assume things.

"How did you both get to us to fast?" Alix asked as she looked back towards the blonde haired male. "I could have sworn that we were the only ones on the water."

    --

Slowly, Lorcan pursed his lips as he listened to Sorscha. He didn't know what else to do or say at the moment. He had hoped that things would be all right and ready to go back to normal, but. It seemed that his hopes weren't going to come true if how she couldn't stand coming into effect.

Reaching out, Lorcan caught the girl and helped her move back into a sitting position before he stood and took a small step back. He couldn't have this girl constantly randomly touching him.

Lance looked at his brother. He didn't know what to say that would be believeable without giving away what they were. It wa forbidden to tell humans what they were if they weren't mates. He knew that merman mating with humans was extremely rare and almost unheard of. He opened his mouth and closed it.

"We were just coming up when you went under," he lied. "I had thought that you two had seen us." He looked away from her. He wasn't a good liar, and he couldn't figure away a better explanation.

    ***

Sorscha looked at the guy and saw how he was keeping his distance from her. She honestly didn't know how to react to this. She was finally getting back to normal. She didn't stand up again just yet. She was going to take it slow and let herself adjust.

"You know I don't get it, Lorcan. You saved me, and yet you are acting like you don't want anything to do with me. Can you tell me why you even bothered to save me?" she asked, looking up at him.

"Oh." Was the only thing that let Alix's lips as she listened to Lance. Her eyes softening a little bit at that reply. It was believable, as it's dark out. So it was easy for the girls to have not noticed them.

"Well anyway, thank you." She murmured quietly as she raised a hand and pushed her wet hair out of her face, "For saving me, saving us." Alix's eyes glance towards her friend for a moment before looking at the deep blues of Lance's. "Do you by chance know when the next ferry would be arriving so we can get to the mainland?" It was getting cooler as the night went on, causing small chills to run down Alix's arms.

    --

A small snort escaped from Lorcan as he listened to Sorscha speaks. "My conscience." Was Lorcan's simple answer for the human girl who seemed to be growing weary of him for some reason.

"Well, it seems like you're fine now." He said as he glanced towards his older brother for a moment before looking at the girl again. "So, we're just going to take our leave. The ferry for this island should probably be here in about a half hour." He said, looking to both girls before looking at his brother. "Let's go."

Lance looked over at his brother. “Well, according to my younger brother, it should be here in a bout an hour,” he answered her. He was curious about her, but he had to make sure that his own people were safe. “Are you going to be able to get to the docks on your own?” Lance asked. He didn’t want to be rude and leave her on her own if she and her friend couldn’t get to the docks. He knew that his brother Lorcan was wantin to leave the girls as fast as he possibly could.

    ***

Sorscha looked at Lorcan. A part of her wasn’t ready for him to leave. She couldn’t explain it. There was something deep in her chest that aches at the thought of him leaving even though she just had met him, and he seemed like he wanted nothing to do with her. She climbed to her feet. Her legs actually holding her weight this time. She stepped up to him and threw her arms around his neck. “Thank you again for saving me. I feel like I owe you a lot,” she said, pulling back and kissed his cheek without thinking.
