June had changed into some pajamas and was getting ready for bed when a knock came at her door. She opened it up, letting Hazel in and instantly her friend knew something was up. She crawled into bed with her, sitting next to her and leaning her head on Hazel's shoulder. "I kissed Drake," she admitted quietly. "He kissed me. I'm kinda freaking out about it?" She said. "On one hand, I'm thrilled, you know? I really care about him, I, well I love him," she said, starting to ramble. "If things were normal, it literally could not be better. But things aren't normal!" She sat up and threw her hands up in frustration. "As happy as I am about it, I feel guilty too. I know I crossed a line and now it affects all of us." She said, leaning back, letting her head thump against the wall.
"He's got to talk to Kelden about it, see if he should get taken off our case. I don't think he should, regardless of whatever is between us, he's good at his job." June sighed. She looked over at Hazel as she tried to offer some solutions. "Yeah, maybe," she said. She liked Kelden but she really just wanted things to continue normally. Well, as normal as they could be anyway. She sighed. "It depends on what happens," she started. "But if it comes down to worst case scenarios, I want to consider an option other than Drake having to lose his position." She said, thinking back to her idea to leave. Drake had made a good point about endangering her family so maybe she wouldn't go move in with her mom, but she could still get far away out of state and give herself a chance at safety while ensuring that Hazel still had the best protection she could get.
She rested her head back on Hazel's shoulder and held her hand. "Why can't things just be normal?" She asked quietly. Granted she never would have met Drake and Hazel and Kelden if things would have been 'normal' but it didn't mean she didn't resent the fact that everything was so complicated too. "Let's forget about my drama. Tell me about your night. You and Kelden left to get ice cream, right?" She said, wanting to change the subject.
Kelden furrowed his brow. "Not in danger anymo- Has he even looked at this case?" He demanded. He wasn't angry at Drake, but he was pissed at the news. "He's gotta be blind if he can't see that this guy is dead-set on these girls. Shit. I won't leave them unprotected," he said, his tone final. He wouldn't leave Hazel until this guy was caught, he couldn't even fathom the idea. "I'll talk to Hazel. I can't and won't force her to give me details but I'll explain what's going on to her and see if she can tell us anything that will make sure this case stays open." He said. He hated the idea of Hazel having this kind of ultimatum. He'd have an earful for his boss tomorrow.
Then Drake dropped even more news on him and he blinked in surprise. "Oh. Oh shit. Well. I can't say I'm totally surprised but damn," he said, running a hand through his hair. He sat for a moment, looking at his partner as Drake told him he wanted Kell to discuss the options with him. "I don't think getting reassigned would do Hazel and June much good. I think we were lucky that they opened up to us in the first place and if the Chief is already trying to close this case... No. Getting reassigned would be essentially letting this guy go free and leaving Hazel and June on their own." He said, shaking his head.
"Listen, we've been partners a while and I've got your back brother. I know you're worried about remaining objective but I think you know your instincts well enough to make the right decision in a situation. If I didn't trust you to make the right calls, we wouldn't be here right now. And you know how close those girls are, do you think June would be able to forgive you if she knew you chose her over Hazel just because you've kissed?" Kelden was sure he sounded harsh, but he knew with 100% certainty that Drake could make the right call even if a situation did arise and he wanted his partner to trust in his instincts and training. "Plus you're not alone in this, I'm here to make decisions too and you already know Hazel and June will speak up if they have an opinion on something. I think the best thing would be for us to stay on this case and keep preparing to take this guy down ourselves."
