There's a kind of love

Maddie didn't get the best sleep she'd ever gotten, but at least she got some sleep. And when woke up the following morning she still felt overwhelmed and her head hurt from all the crying she'd done the night before, but she was determined to try and have a good day. The least she could do for herself was let herself try to have a good idea or be in a better mood. Even though nothing was going the way she would like, this all just went to show that they weren't in control of things, not really. Sure they had full control over themselves and their actions but no one person would ever be able to control everything because others were also always going to have choices which would create situations that were uncontrollable. She did, however, have the ability to choose how she reacted to everything going on currently with Bucky and Sam.

She hadn't seen the news before she'd gone to bed, of course, she'd been more concerned with being alone to wallow in her emotions than what was going on. And truthfully if she had seen the news last night she probably wouldn't have been able to fall asleep at all even with all the crying she'd done. But she'd woken up kind of early that morning and made her way out into the living room where the news was still on and telling all about the big news of a battle in Germany being called the civil war between Avengers. How was she really supposed to handle this? Because now more than one person she cared about deeply was in trouble, and not any kind of trouble that was easy to get out of.

Steve put the craft into autopilot given they had a ways to go before they reached their destination, and he took the time to turn to Bucky figuring they could have an actual face to face conversation about things now. "Don't worry about my friends," he said shaking his head, "they will all be fine and I know everything will work out okay," he added as he already had a plan going through his mind to get everything worked out with everyone. There was no way after all that he was going to actually sit back and let his friends rot in a supermax prison for anything. Even though he knew everyone had willingly come along on the mission and they all knew the risks they were taking being on his side, there was still no way that Steve was going to let them all rot for this anywhere. His friends didn't deserve this, even if they had chosen to be on his side of things this time around they didn't deserve to be treated the way he was sure they were. Not after everything, they'd all done to help save the world, so he had a plan to get them all out one way or another.

"I know you do," he said referring to Bucky missing Maddie. It was pretty clear that all Bucky wanted was to be with the girl again, clearly because he felt something for her. And Steve did want her and Bucky to get a chance and so he would do whatever he could to make it happen. "So once we get to our secure location I promise I'll make sure you can be in contact with her so she knows you're okay. Then we'll get you all fixed up and hopefully, we can fly her out to you," he said wanting all the plans he had to just fall into place.

Annie didn’t know how to handle all of this, she didn’t know them well, except for Sam. She knew he’d probably be okay, he was with Steve after all, but Maddie would probably be freaking out. Annie stood up and went to check on Maddie she turned the tv off. Maddie has been through enough without watching the news she walked over and sat down in front of her, “hey listen to me. I know it seems impossible but they’re going to be okay. Steve Sam and Bucky will Be okay. “ Anne was trying her best to comfort Maddie, she didn’t know Steve well but from her understanding he usually fought his way through worse and turned out okay. “”We have to stay optimistic ” Annie hugged her best friend tight. This was definitely harder on her. She pulled back and stood up, “I have to go to the bakery would you like to come? I mean you don’t have to.. you can stay if you want...”

Bucky couldn’t help but feel responsible for the huge fight between Steve and Tony. After all Bucky did kill Tony’s parents and he had every right to be upset. But he wasn’t expecting him to want to kill Bucky supposed he had that coming. “I mean Steve they are in this situation because of me, I’m sorry I put you in such a position to pick me over your allies...” he sighed. Bucky has done so many horrific things as the Winter Soldier, he was having trouble forgiving himself.

Bucky missed his girl, Maddie, they hadn’t known each other long but he knew in his heart that he loved her. “I just want to tell her I love her, just in case something were to happen. Steve I hate that I brought her into this, I just .. I want something normal. For once in my 90 something hears of being alive. I want to be happy. I want a relationship. I want to live on a farm away from war.” He was exhausted. “I’ve fought for this country since my late teens and it’s all I know and while I admire you and you want to keep fighting for this world, it’s no longer for me. Maybe it’s all the brainwashing hydra did on me.. I just want to rest..” he sighed.

"I know," Maddie said nodding her head and averting her eyes from the T.V. She knew that watching the news was not going to make her feel any better. Honestly, the only thing that would make her feel better was talking to Bucky and knowing that he was okay. She wished she could see him rather than just talk to him, but she was sure the likely hood of that was slim to none. At least not until things calmed down, a lot.

Maddie shook her head at her friend. "I'll let you take care of whatever you need to take care of, and if you don't mind I think I'll stay here. I think I could use a long bath and maybe some more alone time to let all my feelings out, ya know?" She said not sure that she'd be able to cry anymore but she could still scream and Maddie was so overwhelmed with feelings that she needed to let them all out and relax her muscles some before she ended up hurting herself.

Steve couldn't help but chuckle at Bucky's response. "I think we both want the same things," he said shaking his head as he finally started to land the jet. "Because man do I understand, this used to be all I wanted. To serve my country and punch some Nazis. But that war is over, it's been over. And when I woke up everything was new and different and I thought that maybe it would be a chance for me to try and start over. But it never ends. If it isn't Nazis in Germany then it's aliens from other planets, or HYDRA again, or robots, or this or that. It never ends and I'm also getting tired." He said understanding everything Bucky was saying. Steve got it, being the hero was hard, it was time-consuming, and life draining. And Steve would love to get out, to try his luck at living a nice simple life with a girl he really loved. He wasn't sure that would ever happen all things considered but he wanted it.

"Well here we are," he finally said as he flipped a few switches then announced over a secret radio that they were arriving so they could land the jet in Wakanda. Steve was very grateful that T'Challa was being kind enough to let him bring Bucky there, he was even more grateful that they were willing to do whatever necessary to keep his brain from turning into the winter soldier ever again.

"Okay, so as promised now that we are in a secure location you can call Maddie if you want. Or I can call her and tell her where you are and make arrangements for her to arrive as early as possible. We just have to be very careful how we go about things still because well we're both wanted men. And until we clear your name it isn't going to be safe to leave here. Not that I think you'll want to, but I'm just reminding you that you can't," he said truly wishing things could be different but this was sadly how it had to be.

Annie felt so useless, she couldn’t help her best friend she understood though. “All right, I’ll be back later. Try not to watch the news too much, “ she rubbed her back before leaving. Annie knee Bucky would probably be able to make her own friend feel better and that was understandable. Annie went to the bakery and was greeted by her sister who hugged her tight “its about time Ive seen you” she smiled wide. Annie smiled “I know it’s been too long, how’s everything?” She looked around everything looked great. “When you told me you wanted to expand I didn’t think it’d be in Europe that’s a bit of a stretch” Jess told her. Annie sighed and began to explain how she hasn’t seen Maddie in forever and needed to reconnect with her.

Annie wished she was more useful to her friend, she was so sad and worried and not even she could cheer Maddie up. She hoped wherever Steve and Bucky were that they were okay, Sam too obviously. She finished up her plans after a few hours and took some treats back home, Annie stepped in “Maddie, I’m back..” she spoke softly. Looking around when Annie didn’t hear anything she sighed and sat down on the sofa.

Bucky laughed “really? I never thought of you as one to settle down, all you ever did was fight off bullies growing up and even when you applied illegally into the army.” He remembered those days and now Steve was telling bucky that he wanted to settle down and stop fighting. Bucky didn’t mind though Steve deserved to rest for once in his life. Bucky was thrown into war when he was drafted back in the 40s but even became the Fist of Hydra unwillingly of course. Bucky hoped that T’challs and his people would help him get this hydra programming out of his head.

Bucky looked up when Steve told him he could call Maddie, “I want to speak with her first, then you can make arrangements, she must be worried sick about me” he followed Steve out of the ship. Bucky nodded understanding everything Steve was saying. “Okay. “ he watched as Steve started carefully dialing her number and Bucky could feel his heart racing, when Steve handed him the phone Bucky closed his eyes hearing the ringing. Once he heard the click Of the answer he could hear her sadness. “Maddie.. doll.. it’s me” he spoke softly, still loud enough for her to hear.

Maddie had gotten out of the bathtub and wrapped a towel around herself before she heard her phone ring. She took a quick glance at it feeling her heart race when she saw that it was a number she didn't recognize and wasn't from the states. She picked it up quick to answer trying to remind herself to breathe. Maddie didn't know who was actually going to be on the other end of the phone call or if this was going to be someone delivering good or bad news but she supposed at least it was news.

Maddie covered her mouth to try and muffle the sound that escaped her lips when she heard Bucky on the other end. She stretched out her free hand to rest against the counter to try and steady herself. "Are you okay?" She finally asked barely audible, because she'd literally been so emotional over the last couple of days that she was finally starting to lose her voice. Just knowing that he was still alive was brought her a little bit of ease, she wished she knew where he was or if she would ever see him again, but she also knew that this needed to be taken slowly and one step at a time so that it wouldn't end badly.

Steve nodded and decided to step out of the room he and Bucky were in to give his friends some privacy while he talked to his girl. Being alone gave Steve a moment to pull himself together as well and call Annie. He knew that they weren't a thing, and he would even understand if she never wanted to be a thing with him, especially after all the shit that had happened over the last few days. He still knew he needed to call her though. Maddie shouldn't be the only one getting updated on what was happening though. And he'd promised Sam before he'd left with Bucky that he would keep Annie informed of what was going on because she deserved to know. He felt like she had to be worried about Sam because from Steve's understanding of the friendship they'd known each other for a while.

He just hoped that she would answer him and that she wouldn't be totally pissed about everything. After all, he and Sam had run off to try and save Bucky's life ultimately ruining her vacation with her best friend. Plus now here he was with Bucky safe in Wakanda for the time being while Sam was likely off in some high-security maximum prison because he'd committed treason as far as the government was concerned. And Steve had a plan, there was no way he was going to let his friends rot in a prison, it was going to take some time for him execute the plan though. And Steve felt like Annie should know what was going on, it would even be her choice to keep the information he gave her to herself or turn him in.

Bucky swallowed hard hearing her soft voice over the phone, it had been weeks since he’s been captured and on the run. He missed her beautiful face and her lovely voice. He missed her so much and wanted to hold Maddie in his arms, soon enough he tried to remind himself. Steve was such a good man for doing all this, Bucky knew he was a man of his word. Bucky ran a hand through his hair, “yeah, I’m fine for the most part. Stuff happened well, I’ll tell you when I see you. Hopefully soon, I can’t tell you where I am but I am safe and I’m good hands. Steve promised he’ll bring you to me. Oh doll. I’m so sorry for putting you through all this..” Bucky was trying his best not to let his tears escape him. It was impossible though, he loved this woman. “I missed you so much, we will tell you everything when I see you. Again I am so sorry. All I’ve been thinking about is you and how much I miss you. “

Bucky sat down, his missing limb wasn’t hurting anymore they had give him pain killers and even wrapped the damage area. “I just wanted to let you know that I’m okay and give you some peace of mind, I’m not sure when Steve will get the okay to get you but just know how much I care for you and you’re always on my mind and in my heart.” He wanted so badly to tell her the three words but Bucky wanted it to be in person, he wanted to hold Maddie and kiss her and hug her.

Annie walked to the guest room to knock on the door but she heard Maddie on the phone so she stepped back. Maybe it was Sam giving her news, she sighed sadly. Annie felt so alone with everything that was going on Maddie was kind of distant and it hurt but she understood. Annie couldn’t be so selfish and expect her friend to be happy with her boyfriend being a wanted man. Annie sat in the kitchen rubbing her hands together hoping everything was okay. She took out a brownie and took a bite of it, thinking over all of this, surely, someone would tell her what was going on. Annie wasn’t really part of the circle, they didn’t owe her anything. It’s be nice to at least know they were safe.

If Sam or Steve we’re to call her she’d be fine with that, she wouldn’t turn them in. Why would she? They weren’t bad people in her eyes they did what needed to be done. Annie heard her phone ring and she expected it to be the bakery or her sisters maybe her mom. She walked over and grabbed the phone looking at the unknown number she was confused. Annie didn’t get these calls but it might be Sam so she picked up. “Hello?” She answered a little confused.

Maddie took a seat on the bed once she'd finally made it back to her bedroom and she sighed softly into the phone. "It's good to hear your voice," she said pushing her fingers through her hair. "I wish I was there with you. Wherever you are," she added trying not to cry right now. She wanted to, not because she didn't know what was going on but because now that she knew he was safe somewhere she could let herself miss him. And oh did she miss him. It sounded insane even to her that she could feel this strongly about a person that she still barely knew, but she did. And even though it made no sense it was the truth.

"Don't be sorry, none of this is your fault. I know that you didn't do the awful things they're saying you did. I know there's no way you could've done those things because you were with me the entire time. I know that you're not the man the media is trying to sell. I just wish things could've been a little different, but this is the reality we have to face. And I'm just happy to know that you're okay," she told him not wanting him to feel bad for her. There were so many ways that this could be worse than it was and she was thankful that this was the current outcome and not one where he was dead somewhere. And it wasn't his fault that people couldn't let him rest and just try to live a simple life or that he had been framed for something awful for God knows why.

Steve bit his lip for a short moment when he heard someone answer his phone call. He wasn't exactly sure how he was going to go about this, really he was taking a leap and going with it and hoping for the best.

"Hey Annie it's Steve," he said running his hand over his face. "I just thought I'd call to give you an update on things," he said feeling all kinds of nervous, and he hated it. "So Bucky and I are safe somewhere secure. I believe he's still on the phone with Maddie now. Anyway, for starters, I'm really sorry that you and her both got drug into this mess and that your vacation was ruined because of it. I'm a little upset that I didn't even get to ask to take you on a date, and that all of this ended up overshadowing everything. Not how any of us expected I'm sure," he said feeling himself starting to ramble which he knew that he did when he was nervous, and even though he couldn't see Annie's face in person right now just talking to her about everything was making him nervous for some reason.

"Anyway I don't want you to worry because I have a plan to fix it, but I'm sure you've heard by now that there was a little bit of a disagreement between The Avengers that kind of involved us all. And during that whole ordeal, Bucky and I were the only ones who escaped if you want to use that word. Pretty much Sam and the others who chose to be on my side of things all did so willingly which made them criminals of the states, and therefore they were locked up in some prison offshore. But I'm sure that I can get him out, and hopefully it's legal or at least get a pass or something so that he gets out," he told her knowing that if roles were reversed he would probably be a little upset that his best friend had gotten involved in something insane like this and was now locked up. So he was sure she was probably upset but hopefully this wouldn't end badly.

Bucky sighed softly as he sat down his eyes were closed. “It’s so good to hear your voice too doll. I’ve missed it so much. I wish you were here too, and you will soon I’m sure of it. Then we can catch up and I can tell you about my feelings for you” he hasn’t meant to gush. It was hard not to miss her, the way her eyes lit up when she was happy or the way her smile brighten any room she was in. Bucky hasn’t known Maddie very long but he was in love with her and it was strange for him considering all his past. Bucky spent most of his twenties fighting a war and being used as a weapon. He was exhausted he had told Steve many times he just wanted to settle down and maybe start a family with a woman he loves. He just want some normalcy in his life as a super soldier.

Bucky was glad to hear Maddie believed him in-spite of everything that was going on. “I’m so glad you believe me Maddie, that means a lot to me it really does.” Bucky was so lucky to have her in his life, even though it had been only a week or so since she had known her. He fell pretty hard and he wasn’t sorry, he wanted to be with her, Bucky wasn’t one to believe in love at first sight but this was proving him wrong. He cared so deeply for Maddie and he hated that he drug her into this mess, “I shouldn’t have dragged you into my life like this, but you were the first person other than Steve to not look at me like a threat. You’re so kind and sweet I kind of fell for your beautiful eyes..” Bucky smiled softly. “I’m gushing, I apologize..” He was glad Steve couldn’t hear him he’d make fun of him for this.

Annie blinked as she heard Steve on the other one, as she listened to him speak. Once he was done speaking Annie was silent for a couple minutes sighing softly. “I’ll be honest with you Steve I did not expect a call from you, or that you’d remember me” she laughed. “It’s nice getting an update though I know how worried Maddie had been about Bucky, I couldn’t get her out of that slump and from my understanding that only happens when she really loves someone.” Anne continued to listen and nodded even thought he couldn’t see her. “It’s okay Steve, you don’t owe me an explanation or an apology this was bound to happen and it’s fine. Do what you need to do.”

Annie was leaning against her counter as she sighed softly, “thanks for calling us though, this will do Maddie some good, she’s been really upset and I didn’t know how to cheer her up.. some best friend huh?” She sighed. Annie pushes her hair out of her face, “we’re back in the states I’m taking care of some business, I’m moving to Europe with Maddie, I’m just figuring stuff out. Well, hopefully we’ll see each other again and if not well it’s been really nice meeting you and getting to know you.”
