The majority of my stories are in roughly the same place.

Hard As Nails is set in Cloudland, Tennessee. The town is my hometown mixed with a few neighboring cities, only renamed.
Bite Club is set in Lilliput, Virginia which is essentially Grundy where my cousin went to law school.
Harlow Summerford's setting isn't specified, but the city is loosely based off of Knoxville, Tennessee.
And a bunch of older ones take place somewhere random or not mentioned.

I usually set my stories somewhere I know well, but for Jacey's Journey, it's set in London, around Hyde Park and that sort of area. I had to do a lot of research about it because the location is a very important part of the plot, but for most stories I rarely mention specific locations, so it doesn't matter where they're set. I usually imagine them where I live though. It's easier that way.

The settings are places that I already have been to and know in detail

My stories generally take place in L.A., Vegas, or New York. I've never been to any of these places. But the landscape of the city is generally not important to my plot.

Miami, at the moment - though I don't live there. Some of it takes place in New York City too, which is easier since I used to live on Long Island. I do a LOT of research no matter how much previous knowledge I have of the town - wikipedia and GoogleMaps are great for talking about shopping centers and what street a character is driving on - nothing really specific, just so it gave a little more authenticity to the writing.

Now, though, I want to live in Miami. :)

So far all mine are written on unspecified locations. Since I only write original fantasy I think it's nice to not be bound to anywhere, but all my stories are on our earth, just with a magical streak.

Well, I'm a failure and sometimes I don't remember to clarify. (more with older stories; I think I'm getting a little better) When I would say (with older stuff) it was usually in my homestate (I live in the US) or somewhere in the adjacent states. Most often it was Tennessee (that's where I lived) or Kentucky (because my family lived there and I visited often; of course, now it's where I live).
Now I've written a fanfiction or two set in places like Chicago or New Jersey. Of course, the current fanfic I have on here is a fail story that neglects to mention what state or even city in which it's taking place. Facepalm

Recently, I decided to take on something way harder (and potentially way cool-er) and set a story completely in London (and the main character is originally from Cardiff, additionally.) I am pretty excited about it, but also pretty nervous. I really hope I can pull it off; I want to be relatively detailed and know what I'm talking about.

I tried googlemaps after I read your post. Cheese I have found a new love. It is helping so much. Of course it's also reminding me that I've got my work cut out for me, but at least it is doing so in a way that is moving me forward in the right direction. Anyway, thank you for mentioning it here; it's a major source I would never have thought of.

I never specify the location of my stories, so far they're all originals and i've made it so the location is never needed, i just describe the surroundings, Normally my main character is unfamiliar with the surroundings

I usually write FF so they're generally set in the place the band live/grew up but when I do write OF, I always set it in Scotland. Mainly one of the islands or in Edinburgh/Glasgow.
Apart from anything, it's what I'm familiar with as well as the fact that I love it and find most of the places here rather beautiful. Cute

I mostly enjoy writing stories set in the area surrounding Perth in WA, because it is such an isolated strange place it's always fun. Otherwise I prefer remote towns in Europe, because they just have a magical feel to them.

I do a lot of research for my story settings. I like to put each of them in different places because I get to learn about those places too. I'm currently writing a story that tasks place in Alaska, and I'm learning a lot about Alaska now. I find the research part of the stories, the most fun.

If it's a general fanfic, it's set in a city. I don't really say where. Berlin or NYC or LA or something. Doesn't matter. City's a city. I don't talk much about the setting.

Star of David is set in Buchenwald concentration camp, in Germany, and I've researched it. I have a blueprint of the actual camp layout and keep to it as well as I can.

Since my stories are almost always A7X fanfic, I set them in Huntington Beach, California.

When I do write original, however, I try to keep the the place as just a made up town.

I always lean toward the southeast; that's probably me being biased. I think the only real places I've used in stories are Gainesville, FL and Earle, NJ. Other than that, I created imaginary towns - Burlington, Alabama and Claymore, Florida. Shifty

Fandom restraints limit me to Los Angeles a lot of the time, but when I actually get to choose the setting, I gravitate towards places I know really well, like upstate South Carolina, coastal South Carolina/North Carolina/Virginia, the mountains of NC, and Charlotte, NC.

My most favoritest place in the whole wide world to set stories would have to be Charleston, South Carolina and the areas that surround it. It's beautiful, it's not a tourist/party/trashy madhouse like Myrtle Beach, and there are a lot of really gorgeous historic sites that can make their way into a story.

For some reason, I gravitate towards basing my stories in the US, but lately I've been trying to base them in Australia. It's just that, basing it in my home country, the culture is so different and I'd always have to translate the slang I use because it comes so naturally when I'm writing and such. But that's just me being lazy XD

There's a reason why I avoided spending too much time in Heaven in I Can't Hang. I didn't know how to describe it in a way that would appeal to everybody and feel like a true Heaven, and I think that's why I'm also shying away from it in Sainthood. I personally imagine it to have everything and stretch for eternity, but I don't want to force that upon readers. (Actually, I tried not to force anything upon readers of that story. It was kinda like walking on eggshells.)

In general, I'm never really too clear about where my stories are set outside of the broad city or small town, farm or beach, this world or another, etc.
