Mibba's June Writing Contests!

Greetings, Mibbians! Taka here. I'm in charge of the MM's editors, but today I am here to tell you about our newest round of contests. As always, there are three of them: a poem contest, an article contest, and a short story contest.

Writing Contests

June's Article Contest: Summer Movie Reviews
June's Poetry Contest: Haikus
June's Story Contest: Historical Fiction

The poem contest this month is all about haikus. And since it's summer, why not focus on nature? This month, we're looking for haikus written about something recently witnessed in nature, such as a particularly intense storm or even a bright and sunny day. Entries should be properly formatted, and even though poetry rules bend the standard rules of English grammar, be sure that you're making a stylistic choice rather than huge errors!

For those of you that want to write a short story, we have a contest for you, too. This time around, we're asking you to write a historical fiction, based around the person, event, or period of your choice - just be sure to include a description of your choice in the story's summary. There is no minimum word count, but there is a maximum - nothing more than 2,000 words, please.

Poems and short stories not for you? Have no fear! Our third contest, an article contest, may be just what you're looking for. For the June contest, we're asking you to celebrate the summer blockbuster season with us and write a movie review. Have you seen a good movie lately? Write about it! Is there a really cool movie coming out soon that you're really excited for? Write about it! We'd love to hear from you. Make sure that your entry is at least 300 words long, properly cites all sources quoted, and is submitted under the movie review category, and we'll take it!

Each contest's entry deadline is June 20, 2012, just to keep things simple, and you can enter right up until that date. At that point, the judges will step in and have results for you in the July issue of the magazine, published on July 1, 2012.

A few general rules for contest:

  • Please include a link to the contest in the summary (for stories), author's note (for poems), or at the end of the article (for articles).
  • No pre-writes allowed, for this month's contests.
  • Only one entry per person, per contest.
  • Deadline for all contest is: June 20, 2012

Contest Judges

But wait! Is writing not your thing? Do you just want to help judge the contests? Then we have something for you, too. We are currently looking for two Mibbians per contest to help us out. Volunteer judges must have at least one published piece in the category chosen (for example, a poem contest judge must have at least one poem up on Mibba), and those pieces need to follow Mibba's writing guidelines. Judges must also be available to help out within three days of the contest's deadline, so make sure that we can contact you! You'll be chosen at random, and will be notified via private message with the pieces that need to be read, commented, and judged.

If you have any questions regarding the contests or how the Mibba Magazine works, feel free to leave a comment here, ask in the appropriate contest thread, or message one of the contest hosts/MM planners.

We look forward to hearing from you, and we hope to see you in one of our contests this month!
