How-To Halloween: Boo Bites

Finger foods at Halloween parties usually means something savory, but what if you’re craving something sweet and bite-sized? Boo Bites might just fit the bill! These shortcake bites are easy to make and are the perfect thing to snack on during a horror movie marathon.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 and 1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Approximately 4 teaspoons nonpareils
  • 8 inch pan
  • Wax paper

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit (160 degrees Celsius) and grease the bottom and sides of the 8 inch pan. Press the wax paper to the sides and bottom of the pan so it sticks.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar and vanilla extract for 1-2 minutes or until creamy.
  3. Add the flour and salt and beat together until dough forms. It will start out crumbly, but keep mixing until it sticks together.
  4. Add in the nonpareils and mix until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  5. Press the dough evenly along the bottom of the lined pan. Use the wax paper to transfer the dough onto a cutting board, being careful to maintain the shape.
  6. Cut the dough into square pieces, about 1/2 inch each, and place the squares back into the baking sheet without the wax paper.
  7. Bake for 13-15 minutes or until the bottoms begin to brown.

Tips

  • The size of the squares can vary. The smaller the squares, the more you'll have.
  • If you do make smaller squares, you’ll have to lower the cooking time a bit by about two minutes, depending on the oven.
  • Using a pizza cutter is an easy and quick way to cut the dough
  • Sprinkles can be substituted for nonpareils, but more will be needed and they won't show up as well in the dough.
