MM Reviews: Sick
Because that's the in-word right now. Sick. How is "sick" cool? Sick is fever, throwing up, feeling-like-crap.
Sick is a short story centered around Esmé, a freshman in high school whose only friend is a hot, athletic senior who helps out as a library aide. A girl who prefers to be alone or with her nose in a book, Esmé isn’t used to the popularity and attention that comes with being a cheerleader for the football team at her school -- she always tries to find excuses to skip parties and events. That is, until one day she can't avoid it any longer, and is forced to succumb to the peer pressure of the other cheerleaders, especially the captain.
The story follows Esmé from a first person perspective throughout that fateful night at the party that will change her life forever. Sick is the definition of a coming-of-age story that demonstrates the loss of innocence that is experienced by young teens in high school when facing the challenges that they are presented with every day. It is a great read for those who enjoy clever fiction with a great plot line -- addesin is simply a master at this, developing her characters exponentially and engrossing her readers in their lives.
I'd recommend this story to anyone interested in a truly worthwhile read.
