What I expect or look for in Fanfiction is a long list. I look for characters that are kept in character, unless they break character with a well explained reason (Like what reason would make Neville be so brave to stand up to Snape -- if someone was to write about Neville pre-books/movies 5-7).

If anyone is to try and write for a fandom that they've seen barely episodes of, I would want to see proof that they did some research instead of taking the premade characters and interpreting them however they see fit -- unless it's an AUish story but even then, the premade characters should still retain some of their original personality.

I also like it when there are a few OCs (Original Characters) thrown in to help move the plot along. :)

I look for almost everything I look for in an original fiction. I especially look for a unique and twisted plot, not an overly cliched plot that has been used multiple times over and over. I want the plot to be well detailed, even though the characters are probably familiar to me.

Wow, that's a tough one as you get all different types of Fan-Fiction. Well let's see, detail is obversely important as well as a well formed plot. If the Fan-Fic is taking someone else's idea, let's say Max Payne (From game to movie.), and writes their own story based off that idea it's really just the same as Original Fiction (Isn't it?). Now if it's about bands that end up having sex with each other or 15 year old's, then i don't read it. Not my thing. But no matter where is Original or Fan Fiction the same general rules apply.

What I look for in a Fan-Fiction, is true detail. As in, make sure you get the looks right for a real person that you are submitting into your story. Also, a realistic time-span for a OC or two real people to fall in love. Not, you know, "Oh, We just met, and now I love you." type of crap. No offense to people who do this. Any who, there's also the dramatic scenery. I appreciate a few problems here an there, just nothing too dramatic that would never, never, never, ever, ever happen. Unless the genre of the story calls for it. Such as Fiction. :D

I generally look for an interesting plot when I'm reading original fiction. I'm not too fond of the cliche "boy meets girl/girl meets boy - becomes best friends - one falls in love with the other - insert problem here - problem resolved and everyone's in love" type scenario, I like something original. ALSO: call me shallow, but I DO like decent layouts that are made by the writer. It just bugs me if the background's hot pink or bright green and the text background is rainbow leopard prints or whatever.

when I read fan-fiction I'm looking for detailed characters, cannon work where I can tell research has been done, and reasonable plot. I personally enjoy people using as few OC's as possible, developing minor characters in cannon situations shedding light to an original point of view ! By doing this you can see a favorite or new plot twist in a refreshing way allowing a wonderful fix for you obsession !

I look for the quality of the orignial character, make sure they aren't a mary-sue or gary-stew. I also want the fan-fiction to be as realistic as possible. I agree with awkwardmoments, I want the characters to fall fo one another in a realistic time lapse. Unless the characters have known each other for a long time, the characters should not love each other within the first few chapters, at least.

What look for in Fan-fiction is the actual reality in it. For example, famous character and original character meet and after one conversation they're magically in love - it doesn't happen. I also look for how the famous character is now. How they are in the most recent times. Not twenty years ago.

I look for something that stays true to the real people in the story but can also take them and really put them in the story, if that makes sense. I like to be able to recognize a real person in a fan-fiction but I also want to see the fiction aspect of it too.
