I don't think you make him too mean. I think you make him very unpredictable. Like, you never know what he's going to get mad at and go off on about. So, his character in your story definitely needs to be mean in some aspect, which you cover beautifully.
I actually am having Mike in my story go through a hardship and people keep telling me, "Oh, he's not an asshole and he'd never do this stuff! And You know it," but it's like, it's my story and i'm the one writing it. And I know Mike's not like this in real life, that's kinda why it's a story, you know?
I think you do a wonderful job of writing your story. It's a great read!
