In the end, Maddy isn't going to end up with Duke Robert. When it comes to the end, she finally has to make a decision of what world she will go in and she chooses her world.

And the red stuff in the basement is blood. One of the mistresses got tortured and killed really badly so the blood is still in the basement.

What the spirits of the mistresses need help with is that there are a bunch of bodies buried in the backyard of Maddy's current home, but all the people who have lived there in the past were not able to help. And they figured since Maddy isn't really afraid of anything, she is able to help with that.

She thinks that she needs help with them from not getting killed by King Edward but she thought wrong.

Did that spoil too much? :P These are all going to occur during the end of the chapter, so it'd be cool if you could come back and read some of it.
