With advertising, basically you whore it in your journals. The best way to get traffic nowadays is to offer a comment swap: that is, you offer to comment their story if they comment your story. Journal readers are really into that. But you have to make sure that your review is kind of thorough because people don't want to go to the trouble of reading your story and writing a huge comment if yours is something like, "wow good story update plz".

I started writing when I was 9 and just practiced, so I'm assuming that's what everyone should do. XD
