Well there are lots of places on the internet if you don't have photoshop to make banners. There is photoflitre which is like photoshop and you download it. there is also picninck (sp?) and photobucket which allows you to mke banners.
To choose a size you will need something that fits the area on story. If you want the size I have I use inches and I put 7.5 by 3. Check my stories to see how that looks. If you don't want it like that then choose your own.
Next you find picures crop them and add effects to make the banner your own. I like to download fonts and use them so hey match my story. I reccomend typing in free fonts on your browser and looking on one of the websites that come up.
I also download brushes for photoshop, but if you odn't have it i guess you'll deal. On picnick there are a lot of frames and looks effects you can choose from on photoflitre you basically make the effects. Which one is easier in that sense? picnick.
Okay save your banner as jpeg. and upload it on photobucket or tinypic. then go to the sory layout. If you want the banner as the layout go to page > background image url > and then put the url.
If you want the banner imbedded in the layout like I do (see my stories for an example) go to story area > background image url and post the banner's url there. Then You'll see it doesn't quite fit so you have to go to story are > padding I change the first number to 145 or 150. Adjust it so you can see your banner.
Now you probably see the title and your url and everything is blocking it. Go to story area > font size > 0.
If you want the banner with the description. Go to stories > Edi story > Description and put the correct url there.
And that's pretty much it. If you have any more questions ask.
