School ages and the amount of time required varies from state to state, but in the state of Georgia, it's mandatory to go to school. More specifically, we have counties in the U.S. Counties are inside of states. Each county regulates the public schooling within that county.
In DeKalb County (where I live), the school year is 180 days. We get all holidays off and tons of breaks -- thanksgiving break, furlough days (days where teachers don't get paid), winter break, etc. It lasts from early August to almost the end of May. School ended a week ago. (May 20th)

Pre-Kindergarten (4 year olds) is something that isn't mandatory, but kindergarten is harder for your child if they don't go to Pre-K. Pre-K is state funded by the state lottery.
Kindergarten - 5 and 6 year olds - is the lowest level in most public school.
1st grade - 6 and 7 year olds.
2nd grade - 7 and 8 year olds.
3rd grade - 8 and 9 year olds.
4th grade - 9 and 10 year olds.
5th grade - 10 and 11 year olds.
Majority of elementary schools end at 5th grade. Then, students go to a whole different school. It's called middle school, but a few have titles that say Jr. High. It's the same.
6th grade - 11 and 12 year olds.
7th grade - 12 and 13 year olds.
8th grade - 13 and 14 year olds.
After 8th grade, students go to a whole different school. It's called high school.
9th grade (Freshmen class) - 14 and 15 year olds.
10th grade (Sophmore class) - 15 and 16 year olds.
11th grade (Junior class) - 16 and 17 year olds.
12th grade (Senior Class) - 17 and 18 year olds.
After 12th grade, students graduate. They go off to college, find jobs, move away from home, etc.
