Why the Condition of the Modern Novel has
Enhanced the Reality of American Society
“Fiction [is] about what it means to be a human being”
-- David Foster Wallace
The above quote from David Foster Wallace defines fiction from a humanoid standpoint, thereby grounding fabrication in reality. By saying that fiction is “what it means to be a human being”, Wallace creates truth in untruth – he validates and essentially justifies the creation of every piece of fictitious literature. In doing so, DFW verifies the notion that modern literature augments and benefits American society. The modern novel does this by providing the Americans with an outlet and medium to discuss societal commentary and satire, a world through which to vent and escape to, and most importantly, the assimilation of postmodernist thought into the general public.
Satire, an ancient yet necessary tradition in literature, has long been the focus of significant novels. This tradition has persisted to this day, and is still the focus of many modern stories.
