I can counter all your arguments:
Maybe it's ambiguous whether his first victim did, in fact, die when he strangled him? Maybe that has some connection to the fact that he didn't feel anything - to those of us who know details like this (weird children that we are) we can see another level, that maybe he thought he had murdered but had not (we don't hear of the way he disposed of it - only that he did, and it looked like suicide. Maybe he killed him while doing this?)
Waffle/repeated stuff was deliberate, I think. This guy is living a repetitive, boring life. I think I have reason to repeat things or stress things that are important to the story.
