Well, I couldn't exactly tell you why every slash reading "heterosexual female" does it, but I can tell you why I do.
I suppose, for starters, that I don't like to pair them with another girl because I don't like the idea of them being with another girl. I'm not saying I want to grow up to marry them myself, I'm not that naive, but if you have an attraction to somebody - famous or not - you don't really enjoy hearing about them with other women. That sounds like I'm saying I don't want real life Jack or Alex to have a girlfriend, and that's definitely not he case, but I don't want to read a love story about it.
As for why I put them together, well, it actually depends on the pairing. With some others I write/read, I just honestly think it's hot or cute. But with Alex and Jack, the way they act is almost like a relationship sometimes and I think they'd make a good couple and have fun coming up with stories about it. It's all just for fun.
Sorry if it wasn't really a straight answer, but there's not really much to say. We just like it. What's the difference about writing them together or with a fictional female? There really isn't one, to me, it's all on the same level.
No worries :)
