The Bathos of Krapp's Last Tape
In 1957, one year before the publication of Krapp’s Last Tape, Beckett released the English translation of Endgame, wherein the English-speaking world heard Nell assert that “nothing is funnier than unhappiness…. And we laugh…, with a will, in the beginning. But it’s always the same thing. Yes, it’s like a funny story we have heard too often, we still find it funny, but we don’t laugh any more” (18-19).
