And about your story...maybe you could make a scene that the girl is actually in the gang and how it works and shit. You know, to give the reader a better idea of what her life is like.

As for your friend. To be honest, I have had no experience with people and phobias. I have gone on what I've seen, read, and my imagination. All I can suggest is just to take it one step at a time. Get them comfortable in their normal surroundings, and just add a tiny bit of distance each day. I guess you just don't pressure them into doing things? I really don't know, so sorry > _ < ! I hope things go okay.
