In January of 2003, Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong was arrested for driving under the influence in Berkeley, California. Billie Joe Armstrong was pulled over just before 1am in his black BMW convertible because he was speeding. The Berkeley police gave Billie Joe Armstrong a sobriety and Breathalyzer test, both of which he failed. The police took Billie Joe Armstrong to jail and booked him for misdemeanor drunk driving. Later that morning, Billie Joe Armstrong was released on $1,200 bail. Unlike a lot of drunk celebrities, Billie Joe Armstrong was apparently very well-behaved and very cooperative and didn't play the celebrity card to try and get him out of trouble.
Billie Joe Armstrong was 30 years old at the time of his arrest. According to the police report, when asked to blow into a Breathalyzer, Billie Joe Armstrong blew a .18, which is twice the legal limit in California of .08. Billie Joe Armstrong is the lead singer of Green Day, a band that survived the years, forming in 1989 with Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. Green Day exploded with their major label debut, Dookie, in February of 2004. Dookie produced several hits, including "Longview," "Welcome to Paradise," "Basket Case," and "When I Come Around," and sold over 15 million copies worldwide. The follow-up, Insomniac, wasn't nearly as big in the States, but did sell over 10 million worldwide. Nimrod and Warning weren't as big, but 2004 saw the release of American Idiot, the apex of the career for Green Day. The Grammy-winning release sold over 6 million copies in the States and 14 million worldwide, which are incredible numbers considering the current download market affecting sales everywhere. Billie Joe Armstrong continues to work with Green Day and the band is working on a new CD that will hopefully be released soon.
