haha i did too for ages! everything had to be the same level of what i was taking, and had to be equal both sides! Then after ages of hating my work when it wasnt equal, i learnt that angles can be good in trying to really put a context on photos..for example, if you are photographing someone wh u dont really like/someone at a march that you dont agree with, photograph them from above..it makes them look smaller, and you are of more authority than them. where as if you are idolising someone, and think there amazing, photograph them from below, makes them seem higher, taller and more important. few tricks of the trade. most people dont realise it but things like that photo editors immediately recognise, hidden humour almost!
SOO glad you are enjoying the story! I was meant to be going away yesterday but the weather cancelled our plans so i spent the day getting out all my frustration, not sexual though, on the chappie. im trying so hard not to make Lexi like me but i cant help but include things that have happenned to me. eek
ah there really good!! you have a real understanding of symetry (i cant spell) all the france ones are fantastic! definately keep it up! one thing i found a really good place to practise was protests and marches1 you learn how to approach people and ask for photographs, the idea of taking loads of photos but editing down to the ones that will back up what u r trying to sa:your either for the protest or against. let your photos tell your audience your opinion. does that make sense?
im currently taking a break from music and concentrating on portraiture and also underwater fashion. proving to be hardwork but rewarding, like any type of photography!!
yeah exactly. i actually remember the night i realised-i snuck into a green day gig when i was about 15 with my camera. and was shooting away and noticed half way in, i had spent more time watching the photographers in the press pit, that the band!
it sounds like youve already had alot of experience. documentary shoots are the best way to experience roughly what its like to shoot a gig. you've given 3 songs, roughly translating to about 10 minutes to get as many photographs as you can manage, with different angles, zoomed or not, do a few f stop bracketing so see which exposure is right, and make it home. many of my deadlines have been midnight that night, so it can go to press the next day. so i was running home after the first few songs, editing like crazy and submitting!
one thing i must tell you though. its not as fun as people may thinks. at first i was like, this is great im standing closer than the front row..but as soon as the first song plays, your brain goes into photographic mode and you don't even hear the songs. all you are noticing is the lighting and what angle is best for what song. and then you finish and can't remember what songs were played when! so it does involve fucking loads of concentration and alot of waiting around. i usually get to the gig half way through last support act to get a feel for the audience and stuff..and then its just a waiting game. same goes for interviews and backstage shoots. alot of waiting.
its the best job in the world though! most of my stuff is at www.flickr.com/photos/misslexus i've also got a thread in photography section..but no one has commented on them...think their stunned! if you've got any work id really like to see it!
aw im glad! im hopefully going to post tomorrow. we'll see! im using my parents computer as ive come home from university for the weekend.
as for photography. i started out using my dads old olympus when i was about 14, just going to the local parks and playgrounds. then when my social life picked up, i started shooting at friends gigs, in the small bands they were in. then at 16, i joined A level photography (not sure what the equivilant is in usa..) and was top of my class. as i was completing my a levels, i was asked to be inhouse photographer for a venue in London and that got me loads of really quick easy gigs, just to build my portfolio and find my technique. i moved to university when i was 18 and was almost instantly emailed about being in local magazines and helping out local bands. so for ages i was free lance, working directly with bands, charging a fee for shoots or coming down to gigs, then worked for a magazine for about a year. but they never paid me, so i quit! at the moment im concentrating on my degree show, which is underwater fashion (waking up every morning at 6, driving to the local swimming pool, dressing models in old wedding dresses and wrapping them in fabric and dunking them!!)
is it music photography your interested in? or just photography in general?
xxx
