Alex Day Squawks onto the Scene
If you ask any of my friends, you’ll quickly find out I’m terribly afraid of birds. However, I can’t seem to put down Alex Day’s new album Parrot Stories. The debut CD from UK native is catchy and imaginative, as well as musically sound. All of the music and lyrics are written by Alex Day himself, no exceptions. He sports an acoustic guitar and on some tracks he’s caught rocking out on a ukulele.
‘Holding On’ is a sweet song about losing a girl and, as the title suggests, holding on even though you shouldn’t. With lyrics like "I could ride across the sky in a bicycle built for two/Could you teach me how to ride, like you taught me how to feel alive?" Day is clearly a tongue-in-cheek kind of guy, and really knows how to pour the wit over awesome pie.
Alex Day’s delivery is definitely a plus. Although most of the songs are fairly simple, just a couple of chords with lyrics niftily strewn on top, Day uses humor and charm to really sell the songs.
‘No More’ has honest lyrics, bringing just about anyone to that familiar place of not stopping until you get what you want. You and I both know you’ve felt how Day does, especially when he sincerely sings "There were so many things I could regret/ So I’ll think ’till I just can’t think no more."
From an artist with humble beginnings that go back to Youtube, the 11-track ‘Parrot Stories’ is sure to impress even the toughest of critics, as long as they have a sense of humor and a soft spot somewhere in their hearts.
