Green Day – Tré!
Green Day were off to a good start with Uno, but I didn’t like Dos as much. Needless to say, I was anxious to listen to Tré. Would it be more like the Green Day sound I was used to, or would it be more of a “something for everyone” that Dos was like? It was the Green Day sound that I liked, and I love the album. Here’s my thoughts on each song.
Brutal Love
The album opens with a classic rock song that slowly builds up. I adore Billie’s voice, and think all of the instruments come together perfectly to back up the emotions. Definitely a great song to listen to, and it’s an easy 5/5 rating.
Missing You
Usually it’s hard to follow a song as powerful as “Brutal Love”, but “Missing You” does it well. It’s exactly what I expected to hear from Green Day in every single way, and everyone can relate to it. Be prepared for this one to be stuck in your head too. Again, a 5/5.
Drama Queen
“Drama Queen” is a brilliant song. It’s so simple and soft, and breaks up the album nicely from most of the other fast paced beats that the band likes to do. I like the slightly different sound, so 5/5 for a job well done.
X-Kid
If you’re looking for a song to sing along to and to just have some fun with, then this is it. It’s a typical rock song with a guitar that will be stuck in your head for days. The whole song works, and I highly recommend this 5/5 song.
Sex, Drugs, & Violence
I think this is a classic Green Day sounding song, and I’m glad Mike got to sing in it because he has a great voice. Some people might think the rhyming in the chorus is a bit strange, but I think there’s a greater meaning within it, and I like that about it. That and the catchy sounds from every single instrument make it a 5/5 song.
A Little Boy Named Train
This song is kind of catchy and is interesting to listen to. However, there’s a weird effect on Billie’s voice, and I just can’t look past it. Because of that, this song only gets a 3/5 rating.
Amanda
To me, “Amanda” just doesn’t stand out like a lot of the other songs. It lacks excitement. Even though it has the classic Green Day tune at the end of the song, I’m just not a fan of the song, and only give it a 3/5.
Walk Away
At first, this song seemed a bit too simple for my liking, but it’s grown on me. I like the vocals, and alongside the guitar it is a catchy tune. However, I only give it a 4/5 rating because it’s not as strong as most of the other songs on the album.
Dirty Rotten Bastards
If you like songs like “Jesus of Suburbia” where there are multiple smaller songs mashed into one big masterpiece, then you’ll love this song too. It’s constantly changing, but not in a confusing manner, and come the end of the song I always feel like listening to it again. It took me a bit of getting used to it, but now it’s a 5/5 song without a doubt.
99 Revolutions
Tré demands your attention with his drums, and it quickly escalates into a good tune. The only critique I can give this song is about its repetitiveness. I think the chorus is just a bit too plain and should have another line or two in it. Nonetheless, it’s a fun song to sing to, and I imagine it’ll be a good one live, so I rate it 5/5.
The Forgotten
I was really looking forward to hearing a beautiful ballad from Green Day, and this just surpasses my expectations. It’s truly a wonderful song. Even though I don’t find this song stuck in my head like a lot of the other songs, it’s still amazing and extremely difficult to skip. You probably saw this coming, but it’s another 5/5 song.
There isn’t a doubt in my mind that this is a great album that deserves a 5/5 overall rating. It’s probably safe to say that it’s my favourite out of the trio. However, I think there would have been a better option for the band: make only one album with the best songs on it from all three albums, even if it was a bit longer than a “normal” CD. Then I think it could have topped “American Idiot” and just blown away fans. Beats, lyrics and themes wouldn’t be repeated and the weaker songs wouldn’t merge into one in my mind. Nonetheless, the albums are a great listen, and I’m eagerly awaiting more music from Green Day.
