Lord of the Flies - Comments

  • It's a great book, but it would be interesting to see what the authours take on the book would be now.I think if somebody like Roger turned up he'd probably be shouted down by everyone else. There's more equality now-class was an important thing for the boys in the story, but it doens't matter to people now as much as it did then.Unfortunately, most of the people I know who have read the book just said it was "totally gay" because the boys go swimming together.

  • In all honesty I really like this book too much. I chose it for project in English two years ago expecting to enjoy it and reading the book was a drag for me. Yes, the descriptions were wonderful, the imagery, but it certainly wasn't an atention grabbing book for me. I have to agree with syke! It really didn't start getting interesting to me until the pig head talked. Just not my type of book I suppose.

  • ah, just finished this book for English class, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
there is so much symbolism, foreshadowing and all that good stuff :D
your article could have gone into more depth, but overall it sums up the novel pretty well.

  • I did half of my English Dissertation on this book so know inside out pretty much.
It took a bit to get into but I think that was just because it was different to what I normally read and the writing style was also different.
Golding managed to write a novel far ahead of it's time and I like how it is still debated even now amoung a younger generation [myself included] This is by far one of those books you just have to read, whether you like it or not. It's a complete classic and hopefully will continue to be.

  • lottie2427, it was Simon [in chapter 5, page 89] who said that the "beast" was themselves, not Piggy.
But, anyway, I love this book so much!! Actually, for about a year or so, I had a weird obsession with the book XD

  • I did not care for this book at all. Sure, the symbolism and imagery were interesting to study, bit the ending was terribly written. The author did not effectively use the deus ex machina ending and that leaves the reader in a bit of a tailspin. Honestly, I was disappointed by this book.

  • I really like this book. I have to do it for my English Lit GCSE so I've studied it in a lot of detail. But it's a great book, with so many meanings.

  • i didnt really like the book...sure it was interesting but the author...described way too much to the point were i didnt understand what he was talking about..

  • I hated this book SO much! Sure, the messages and the symbolism were intriguing to figure out, but the overall writing technique was just terrible. The only interesting part was about 140 pages in, when the pig head starts talking. /:

  • I honestly did not care for this book. I understand the messages and such, but I just couldn't finish the book because I couldn't stand it. That's just me, though.

  • I have to read this for Honors 1 next year... Actually, sometime this summer... I think I'll see if the library has it, so I don't have to go buy it... well, maybe I should buy it... Grah, lol. Good review.

  • I had to do it for my English GCSE which means that I've read it about 4 or 5 times! I enjoyed the general story but I must say that it tends to get boring after so many times and also writing tons of essays on it! It is a good book though! XD

I'd also include some of the things that you analysed in the meanings and messages.
    Like:
The "beast" representing everyone's fears because it was different for all of the boys and it's also not real. Secondly, about the beast, Piggy said that perhaps the beast they feared was themselves which obviously represents something about people.
When Simon dies it represents the boys losing their innocence.
When Piggy dies it represents the boys losing the order around them. Also the conch is lost too and so the final factor which was keeping them slightly together was lost.
The first fire which burns down a large area of the forest shows that things the boys do will rapidly get out of control.

Also the first chapter is very important because it gives the reader an idea of what is to come:
The colours of the bird described represent fire.
Ralph has a childish attitude which gives us an idea of what the rest of the boys will be like.
There is the first example of death - not all of the other children are there and no adults are around.

There's a lot more I could write but I'll leave it for others lol

  • I love the book, but you could have written more about how the conch represents civilisation and when Roger Kills Piggy, that marks the complete breakdown.

  • This is the only book I can truly say that I absolutely hated. I suppose it just isn't for everyone. I can see why others like it...just not for me. xD
