Um, how is the title his fault? Besides the fact that is what he wanted it titled. I don't see a fault in doing so.

Do you think as many people would have even looked at this book if his title hadn't been so provoking and controversial? It's a selling technique (and it worked very well, judging by the sales).

It's not that the responses are any better in their titles. But if Dawkins hadn't named his book such in the first place, that wouldn't be a problem. It might have still gotten hostile responses from believers, but the title WAS sort of his fault.

With regards to the title being upsetting - I hope the commenters took note of my reference to the spin-off books 'The Dawkins Delusion' and 'The Deluded Atheist'. By all means take offence at the word 'delusion', but I'd also mark the equally 'offensive' parodies.

oh boo hoo if it's the title that's "upsetting". i'm sure there are books title out there about non believers that are equally "upsetting", but no one gets up in arms over that. why? because it's not something to get upset over. people getting upset, majority being christian, are just looking to play the victim card. your religion takes up a good third of the population so you really don't need to be whining about something such as a book. and that remark about you not considering this book non fiction just made you the opposite of what you were disagreeing with. that right there should have been a tiny bit "upsetting", but isn't because it just speaks volumes about what you represent. thank you for showing your behind for what you really are.

I tend to stay away from any books debating religion, simply because it's all a paradoxical argument to me, and there is no right answer. Another comment said that the reason the book was upsetting could be found in the title. I could pretty easily agree with that. It's one thing to reason your opinions and make a good debate out of this. But the title "The God Delusion" certainly gives people the impression of being attacked. Calling all believers deluded is not really a good way to start off a book; all it does is cause them to become determined not to let their beliefs be moved by the book.

It is my view that only those who are insecure in their own beliefs would find this book upsetting due to the very fact that it challenges those views. If one is certain about their own beliefs then one should be happy to have them challenged and relish the prospect of justifying them to a wider audience.

Not really. I disagree, quite strongly, actually. I myself, am a very strong Christian, and am in no way insecure. The reason I find this book upsetting, is because of one... the title. "The God Delusion." Excuse me, but that title alone is enough to have me thinking that this guy is looking for a fight. My beliefs are not a delusion.

It is refreshing and readable even to those who do not often venture beyond fiction.

I quite often venture beyond fiction. I just wouldn't put this book in the "non-fiction" section. :]

I'd like to read it. I hate it when people fire off about stuff like this - 99% of them will only have read a summary of its contents, and not the actual thing.
Personally, I believe there is a god, but I don't think he's the holy, powerful, perfect being that everyone makes out is up there somewhere...
Perfectly written article. ^_^
