@rust cohle I felt awful giving up but I just couldn't take it any more! I found Joe to be unbearable which I think solidified my dislike of the book. I haven't read "Atonement", but I've heard it is incredible written.

I had to read this novel last year for English Literature and it was a TOTAL drag. I envy you being able to stop reading it before the end - the whole thing was a huge anti-climax and Joe has to be one of the most insufferable characters ever created. I absolutely loved McEwan's 'Atonement', but this was just shockingly bad. Totally agree with this review!
