(500) Days Of Summer

(500) Days Of Summer Warning - this will contain spoilers

(500) Days Of Summer. Charming. Beautifully produced. Almost perfect in my opinion.

Tom Hansen believes that he'd never truly be happy until the day he met the one. Summer Finn doesn't believe in true love at all. They meet and share the most beautiful thing they could, but is it love? Tom sure thinks so, but Summer is never sure.

Summer's parents split up when she was little leaving her to think true love is only a fairytale. The only things she's ever loved is "The first her long dark hair. The second how easily she could cut it off and not feel a thing." And Tom's always been searching for 'the One'. Tom sees Summer one day at his work and falls for her immediately, his dreams come true when she quotes some lyrics from his favourite band The Smiths and slowly things work in his favour and he ends up with her. Summer likes him, and everything's just right but is Tom only seeing the good things and ignoring the bad?

I won't ruin the movie for you by telling you the whole plot summary, it would make you question if you really need to see the movie. But even if I did do that there is one thing I will say, it wouldn't really matter because you really need to see this movie anyway.

My favourite thing about this movie is that it is so brutally honest about what love really is in some cases. I have to admit it was almost harsh to learn this side of what love can be through a movie at only 17 before I have actually ever been in love and experienced in myself. But the fact that is was a brilliant movie made that all OK!

As the narrator says right from the start "This is a story of boy meets girl. But you should know up front, this is not a love story", it is definitely not your average love story, it's so much more!

I love how it all starts out great and then Tom and Summer's relationship falls apart like always, but then I love it even more that they don't resolve their problems and skip off into the sunset. I love the antithesis of their relationship, how Tom says "I love her smile. I love her hair. I love her knees. I love how she licks her lips before she talks. I love her heart-shaped birthmark on her neck. I love it when she sleeps", at the start then at the end says "I hate her crooked teeth. I hate her 50's style haircut. I hate the way she smacks her lips. I hate her knobbly knees. I hate that cockroach shape splotch on her neck!" That's just so perfect and human!!

Summer is like a time bomb, and as the movie counts down the 500 days till they're over, they're also counting down the days until Tom really realizes Summer isn't the one and it blows up, nicely though. With no screaming matches or death glares across the room but no, like adults and human beings.

I know love isn't always like that for everyone, there are people who do fall in love and it's all great but there are a lot of people who don't realize they're just getting played, in the nicest way possible sometimes too. It didn't put me off love but it definitely made me see it from a different point of view to the one I already have and have cultured from seeing some many other love stories.

My favourite scene is the scene in the Home & Living shop. You can see the actors chemistry all the way through this scene, and of course the whole movie, and their amazing acting skills too. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (the young one from 10 Things I Hate About You) is perfect as the male protagonist Tom, he does it amazingly well. And Zooey Deschanel.. What can I say? I just love that girl as an actress way too much, she did her role perfectly as always.

And the soundtrack? Well, it's just perfect. A mix of indie, alternative and rock at all the right places with beautiful songs like "Vagabond" by Wolfmother and "She's Like The Wind" by the brilliant Patrick Swayze make it all just right.

I definitely recommend this movie to everyone, it shows a different and more realistic side to love, has an amazing plot line and idea, great actors and the ending.. Well, you'll need to see the movie to get why that part is just the cherry on the cake in this beautiful movie. 10/10 stars from me.
