@bad romance. They wanted everything to set in place the movie is set in New Orleans where there is a good amount of the black population,VooDoo, Jazz and great events. It's all for the story to come together how else would a man become a frog in the 1920's?
I thought this movie was amazing. Yes Disney does have darkness, Snow White...the witch scared the shit out of my when I was a child, Lion King, Pinocchio, Aladdin you name it. I've got to say most of the Disney movies today are all tween movies, ones with talking animals, or sugarcoated things. I'm not saying I hate disney, it's just a sigh of relief that they have released another 2D animation...nothing against the new effects I love Pixar , it's just nice to see some old school not so cautious about the rating type of movie.
selene_moon_stone: Not just the Hunchback. How 'bout The Lion King?
Disney always had some subtle dark undertones in their movies. We just didn't take notice of that because we were kids when 2-D animation was at its prime.
:) I'm so glad Disney's finally going back to how it was! I thought the stuff I grew up with was long-lost.
Great article!
The only thing was the mention of how it is darker than Disney's other animated movies, but I don't think so. One of the key things that Disney does is show both sides of the spectrum. You've got husband-stealing, ulterior motives, stampeding, burning, exile, bias, usurping of the throne, black magic, murder, and all that good stuff: but the thing that makes Classic Disney so fantastic is that they always have the Happy Ending!
I love The Princess and The Frog so much! I went to go see it the day it came out and I was amazed by everything in the movie. Disney did an excellent job portraying each character and I can not wait until it come out of DVD! But I can see why so many people had negative comments about the way Tiana was portrayed. Sure Cinderella was a hard working individual, but she's not African-American. It really all comes down to race, which it shouldn't, but that's the leading argument here. Personally I don't have a problem with it, because it reminds me of a lot of people in my life, not all of them are the same race and that really shouldn't matter and it doesn't to me. I think that everyone should be as dedicated and hard-working as Tiana. She's a great role model!
lol yeah there was a comedian on the royal variety show who was talking about this,
"Good news, Disney has made their first black princess, Tiana, in the upcoming movie The Princess and the Frog. Bad news, she spends the majority of the movie as a frog. But we'll take what we can get"
cracked up at that. it's funny because it's true!
people who think it's a bad thing for her to be portrayed as someone who works hard for a living are stupid. i'd prefer a hard working princess to a damsel-in-distress, afraid to chip her nails priss. but that's just me.
