Voodoo is really big in New Orleans, though. So, in a place and setting like that, the movie's "G" rating is perfectly acceptable, in my opinion.

Mulan isn't a "classic Disney princess". The classic Disney princesses are as follows:
Ariel, Belle, Briar Rose, Jasmine, Snow White.

Yeah, you're right. A lot of times, though, when someone mentions Voodoo everyone automatically starts thinking about Satanism and stuff that's way off. I haven't seen the movie, but I've been hearing so many people talk about the Voodoo in the movie when they don't have any clue what Voodoo is.

But yes, there's a large chance having dark spirits and stuff like that in a movie calls for it to be rated a little higher.

Hell is in a Christian religion, but that doesn't mean that demons jumping around is appropriate for all audience. The voodoo features dark spirits from the beyond and it's a little scary for children, in my opinion.

Isn't Voodoo an African religion? I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed in a G rated movie.

I didn't mean it wasn't a typical Disney princess movie because of the magic or darkness. It had to do more with the presentation. The focus of this movie, from Tiana's eyes, was not to get the prince until more than halfway through the movie. In a typical Disney princess movie, it's all about the love story. This had a lot more than love story. Beauty and the Beast didn't focus on Belle's love for the Beast, but the focus was the love story.

I just went to see this movie last night. I agree completely with what you've said. It wasn't at all what I was expecting and the weird plot surprised me multiple times. I expected at least a little of old Disney movies to come through but I really didn't see all that much in there. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie but it wasn't all I was hoping it would be.

From your description, it sounds just like classic Disney :)
There's always been that element of darkness to their movies. I remember watching the Lion King with my little brother and every time Scar would appear he'd be practically shaking in his little jammies. Same for Ursula in the Little Mermaid which has a bounty of husband-stealing, dark magic, manipulation etc.
The Disney thing is that they always get their happy ending :) Happily Ever After.

*Edit Note*

The 'K' at the end of magic was intended.

"This movie is not a typical Disney princess movie."

I'd have to disagree.
Disney has always had a dark storyline mixed in with most of their movies. From The Hunchback of Notre Dame to Sleeping Beauty, each one either had Dark magick, exile, ulterior motives, or murder.

The only thing that I can say that Disney isn't so typical for is the fact that this one had African Americans as the leading role's.

I loved the way the movie was portrayed. I'm actually glad that they've gone back to using old animation like they use to. In addition that they actually did a bit of research on the topic unlike some previous movies they've done. >_>

i think it's super funny that there are african americans in a disney movie. i'm not racist but walt disney was superrrr racist if you've ever noticed that in older disney movies african americans are always drawn in the whole jim crow style.

i personally can't wait to see it, it looks awesome but i agree, it will never be a classic like the older disney movies.

I agree, this isn't a Disney Classic, it's just a new Disney movie. I mean, it can never stand up to classics like "The Lion King" or "Beauty and the Beast".
