Faith

The Korean drama, Faith (also known as The Great Doctor after being translated from its Hangul title 신의 (Shin-eui)), is a show that has entertained and captivated many with its storyline and cast. It is a Fantasy-Historical-Romantic-Medical drama that is set during the mid-1300s when Korea was known as Goryeo. It stars a great cast with Lee Min-Ho, Kim Hee-Sun, Ryu Deok-Hwan, and Park Se-Young as just a few of the main characters. It aired on the Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) from August 13 to October 30, 2012 and has 24 episodes to its name.

Plot

As leader of the Wu Dal Chi, the king of Goryeo's personal bodyguards, General Choi Young (Lee Min-Ho) is protecting King Gongmin (Ryu Deok-Hwan) and Queen Noguk (Park Se-Young) as they travel towards the palace from Yuan. As they travel, they are attacked by assassins during their night at an inn and Queen Noguk is critically injured by a slash to the neck. With her injury being fatal and the possibility of death looming over them, Choi Young is ordered to venture through a mystical portal, known as Heaven's Gate, that isn't far away and to return with Heaven's Doctor in order to save the queen's life. Choi Young does so and is transported to modern day Seoul where he then begins his search to find a doctor. He finds one in the form of Yoo Eun-Soo (Kim Hee-Sun), a woman who was giving a lecture at a convention center, and takes her and her tools back to his time to save Queen Noguk's life.

Eun-Soo is rattled by Choi Young, thinking him to be a mere drama extra, though ultimately does as she's told and saves the queen from death. Choi Young promises to return Eun-Soo back to Heaven, but when more assassins turn up, they find that they're running out of time to do so as the portal is slowly closing. When they reach Heaven's Gate, Eun-Soo is prevented from returning home by King Gongmin's order to keep her there and she is trapped in Choi Young's time when the portal disappears. Choi Young continues to protect Eun-Soo in order to keep his promise to eventually return her back to her own time, all the while slowly falling for her and continuing his duty of protecting the royal family with the Wu Dal Chi.

Overall

This drama was something different for me to watch and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I found that it was very interesting with it being a historical drama as it really gave you a good idea of what Korea was like back in the mid-1300s. The plot was very deep and amusing, allowing me no time to do anything else but watch the show unfold with each new episode. I thought the characters were great and their actors did a wonderful job portraying them. There wasn't much romance until the last few episodes, but the simple relationship between Eun-Soo and Choi Young was very entertaining to watch grow. I found this show as a whole to be very entertaining and would recommend it to anyone, especially to those who are interested in historical dramas.
