He suffers neurosis related anxiety disorder and can't handle stress or anxiety as well as Frank or Elena can. If in a very stressful or worrying situation, he will panic and suffer a panic or anxiety attack. Before Frank came along, Gerard was very easily manipulated into believing anything bad that happened was all his fault and he should have done things different. His daughter is the result of a one-night stand. At first, he was unwilling to commit to parenthood but that changed when there was a probability of his child going into care.
