Buffy is a Vampire/Monster Slayer, and with that comes the need to be able to control your emotions and your pain. So Buffy very rarely shows emotion, after all, emotion is weakness. There are only a few people in her life that can truly make her open up: Her sister, Dawn. Her best friend, Willow. Her friend Xander. Her ex/Friend, Angel. And lastly, Her love, Spike.

Angel is a vampire cursed with a soul, by gypsies. He is Buffy's love/ex/friend... Its really a complicated relationship... If at anytime he reaches Pure Happiness, he reverts to being his old self, Angelus, without his soul. Usually this happens by ... with Buffy, or Cordelia, or a spell, or Happy Pill. So therefore him and Buffy cannot be together, it is to risky.

Spike fell in love with Buffy after receiving a chip in his head from The Initiative, that caused him severe pain whenever he hurt/was about to hurt, a human. He spent a lot of time with her and the gang killing demons. About 2 years after the chip being installed, Spike realized that the chip alone would never be enough to win Buffy's heart, and he fought to win back his soul... and he did. He then became the second vampire with a soul. However he wasn't for long. About 1 year and a half 2 years after receiving a soul there was a major battle between The Scooby Gang, The Slayers, and The First Evil, in which Spike gave his life to close The Hellmouth. Not long after however he came back to life, but didn't return to Buffy, until now.
