Veruca is a wealthy young girl. She lives in Buckingham Palace, England. She is also the heir to the Salt fortune. She is spoiled rotten, and is cold and direct. Only when she is denied something she wants does Veruca lose her temper. However, deep down, she is insecure and lonely, and often tries to cover up those feelings by being spoiled and demanding. She has kind of a little crush on Willy Wonka, although she also keeps it well-hidden. (Played by Julia Winter)

Some see him as a genius. Others see him as weird or an oddball. The reasons for these are varied. Long ago, because of his father's dislike for candy, Willy became determined to become a chocolatier, and ran away to follow his dreams. Then, because of spies infiltrating his factory and stealing his secret recipes for candy while posing as workers, Willy Wonka closed his factory, found the Oompa-Loompas and hired them to be his workers, and then re-opened his factory. But, as a result of those events, Willy eventually stopped trusting people and developed a disliking for, among other things, family, especially parents, believing they hindered a person's creative thinking processes and that they weren't, in his words "conducive to a creative atmosphere". Then he met Charlie Bucket and then, after patching things up with his father, learned that family is valuable. (Played by Johnny Depp)

Mariella Salt (nicknamed Mella by Veruca) is the older sister of Veruca Salt. Unlike her younger sister, who is spoiled rotten and has become bratty as a result, Mariella is very different, as well as very imaginative. Although she too is spoiled by their father Rupert Salt, Mariella is thankful for the presents she gets from him, and is more sensible and less demanding, and has common sense (which Willy Wonka has taken a liking to).
