Prince of the Phoenix Realm, a country as old as time, hidden away from the world. Prince Maximilian, as the only heir to the throne, is quite spoiled, though usually doesn't act it. He has recently turned fifteen years of age, the time when most young princes of the Realm choose a bride. Prince Maximilian doesn't want to marry a princess, however. Maximilian would much prefer the whipping boy.

Jack may just be the most unfortunate lad in the entire universe. Born to a young, unwed slave girl, Jack was taken at birth from his mother. The woman's punishment for fornicating out of wedlock was to see her son grow up as the palace's whipping boy. Whenever the young prince misbehaved, instead of being punished, he watched the guards beat the whipping boy. Jack had grown used to the humiliation of being whipped, and no longer made a noise, no matter how hard he was beaten. Over the years, however, he's developed quite the crush on Prince Maximilian.
