He doesn't approve of Riley and Sam's relationship because Sam is talent and also he knows how the rockstar types can be since he's worked with them for over 20 years. He just doesn't want to see his daughter getting hurt, like any caring father.

She doesn't approve of Riley and Sam's relationship after hearing stories about rockstar types from her husband and wants her daughter to settle down with someone slightly more promising.
