15 (also the narrator) She lives with her mother, her 19 year old sister,and her sister's daughter in a 3 bedroom apartment in the life-or-death neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. She is in a domestic violence relationship with her pot-headed, alcoholic, and abusive boyfriend , Aaron , whom is 2 years her senior. She doesn't tell everyone about her pregnancy immediately, but they do find out eventually. Simonee later reconnects with her old friend, Christopher "Chris" Thompson, who moved to Brooklyn from North Dakota. He later admits his feelings to Simonee, who accepts and moves in with him and his family. Chris takes care of her child like it is his own, which sometimes worries Simonee, fearing that her child will never have a relationship with her father like Simonee.

19 Janae is the older sibling of Simonee and her only sibling, as far as the two girls know. The girls' father left 2 months before Simonee was born, when Janae was 4 years old. Since then, she nor her mother have any contact with her father, although he has tried to fight for custody over Janae, but has failed several times. Janae has her own child, Chenille Aaliyah Renee Jones, and has little contact with her child's father, either. Janae as struggled with substance abuse in her past, but now dedicates her time to raising her daughter and annoying Simonee as many times as she can.

Chenille is Janae's two-year-old daughter whom she lives with, although Simonee watches her the most. She doesn't really know her father, but he does tend to visit her and her mother every once and a while.

17 Aaron is the pot-headed, alcoholic, and abusive boyfriend of Simonee and the father of their unborn child. Although the story does not tell when the abuse started, he does physically abuse her frequently throughout the story.
