A low-wage engineer, Jason wasn't always a happy guy. He had his ups and downs like anyone else; he got angry, he got sad, but he always came out grateful or happy. His life wasn't that exciting, the most ever happening being on-the-job accidents, and he liked it that way.

When she was first born, on the same ship in which she lived her life, Ema was able to make noises like a normal child; she could cry, she could laugh, she could sigh and try to speak. As she came upon her third birthday, however, an accident happened when her parents were walking her to the child care center; a pipe running down the side of a wall burst, sending fragments of the metal into the child's neck and chest. Her parents immediately rushed her to the medical deck, and they were able to stop the bleeding and seal her wounds. Only, the day after this, did her parents learn the horrible truth of what had happened to their daughter; the fragments of metal had shredded her vocal cords, rendering her unable to speak. Regardless, they sent her through a class in sign language, and regained their ability to communicate with their daughter. Still, even by the time she reached her eighth birthday, she was not able to speak and had difficulty making simple noises.
