  Bree is the younger sister of Shawn Kovack. She is very into working out and eating right. Though she is very friendly and speaks her mind, she’s been pretty withdrawn after her brother’s death, spending a lot of time in her head. She has been in a relationship with Mason Bryant for a little over a year.

  Zach is one of the first people that Bree meets at her new school and is a bit of a loner. He had a hard time during his junior year that he avoids talking about. Zach really enjoys literature and movies, and also really likes theatre. He can be very standoffish but is actually very nice when you get past his shyness.

  Shawn is the deceased older brother of Bree Kovack. He committed suicide a few weeks after his high school graduation. He was very popular and charming, and a celebrated soccer player and member of the Honors choir. His suicide was very stunning and devastating.

  Jason is Bree and Shawn’s father. He’s been mostly estranged from the family since he and Emily divorced, though this was not entirely his choice. He works as a doctor and owns his own practice, though he specializes in ears, noses, and throats (ENT).

  Mason is Bree’s boyfriend of slightly over a year. He was in the same graduating class as Shawn and recently left to attend Hiram University. He’s not incredibly affectionate and often times says the wrong thing, but usually means well.

  Trina is Zach’s little sister. She very much wants to fit into the high school hierarchy of popularity and spends a lot of time choosing her clothes and doing her hair and makeup. She is trying to figure out her identity and place in the world, like everyone else.

  Emily is the mother of Bree and Shawn Kovack. She works as a psychiatrist and since divorcing Jason, has remarried to Franklin Skarsgaard, also a psychiatrist. Together they began a practice, which they dedicate all their time to. Emily has always been distracted, but has become entirely detached from her daughter since her son’s suicide.

  Franklin is Emily’s new husband and Bree’s stepfather. He cares for Bree and Shawn very much, and was struck hard by Shawn’s death. It was his idea to have Bree finish out high school with her father in an effort to keep her away from all the bad memories.

  Aiden is Bree’s best friend from her previous high school. They have been best friends since sixth grade and have declared themselves “soul sisters.” Aiden is technology savvy and also knows a lot about photography and videography. She also loves fashion, and tries to spend time with Bree and visit her as much as possible.

  George is Zach and Trina’s dad and the owner of The Hungry Bear, a small country diner. He is well-meaning, but doesn’t understand his son and sometimes gets exasperated with him. He is often under a lot of stress from his business and focuses much of his energy there.
