Ney is 19. She is quiet and thoughtful. She is a talented musician and wants to be a movie composer. She is about to start university and she wants to live her life but is terrified that her dreams my come crashing down if she does inherit a paternal gene mutation that means she could start to lose her hearing any day - it was thought to be a recessive male inheritance until her Aunt Hymn also lost her hearing at 22. bilingual in Sign Language - highly proficient she got her certification at 16, her father takes her to science conventions as his translator since she was 15.

Albie is 41. He became deaf at 22 after starting to lose his hearing at 19. He is a geologist and very active in the scientific community as well as teaching college courses - he had a TA record his notes and he plays them while working and a translator helps answer questions the students have, Albie can talk well but prefers to safe talking for one on one conversations when he can read lips. Albie met Laura when she was 20 (he was 21) at a University ran deaf society. They hit it off right away due to Laura being deaf (from childhood meningitis) and Albie being from a family suffering from inherited gene mutation he was also fluent in sign language - they fell head over heals and got married and had Courtney a year later, then tragedy struck just after Ney's birth when Albie's sister Hymn also became deaf. Laura and Albie realised that their daughter now may also inherit this affliction.

Laura is 40. At 5 years old Laura was struck down with meningitis - she survived but was deafened by this illness. She is an author for childhood trauma and illness books. She met Albie and they were soulmates and they decided to start a family with the belief that if they did have a son who inherited Albie's deaf genes that they could raise and cope raising them, they were more apprehensive at first about having a hearing child but realised that their children should be hearing until their early 20s so that they should teach their children to be bilingual. Interesting fact - Laura was offered a cochlear implant when the girls were in their preteens but she refused.
