Andrew, or Andy, was born and raised in Buffalo, New York before the disease took his parents. He moved to South Carolina to live with his aunt and cousin and went to Colombia for college where he met Emery Holland. They have been a couple for almost 5 years, living with each other and helping Emery as she lost family members. When Andrew hears that someone on campus has been affected with the disease, he fears the worst, but suddenly, he finds himself in a tough situation where his life is put on the line

Candie Franklinton was born in Santa Monica, California during the epidemic. When the disease took millions of lives in California, Candie and her family moved to Hawaii, where they heard the disease hasn't affected anyone yet. A few years later, when Hawaii is destroyed by climate change and the epidemic, Candie manages to escape with her brother to the East coast, in hope of helping with the search of a new cure. Only, when she arrives, her brother and her are taken by special agents for the government to find out that they are the future for a new cure.

The brother of Candie Franklinton, Tobie was born in Maui, Hawaii where his family had escaped the epidemic from Santa Monica. Losing his parents when the disease took almost the entire town of Maui and other surrounding Hawaiian cities. Candie managed to find a place in Virginia where they can escape from the epidemic and help find a new cure. However, when they arrive, a group of special agents kidnap him and his sister, separating them.

Nora Nguyen was born in Washington D.C. which was the headquarters for battling the disease taken over the entire world. Her parents wanted to escape to London, where her father is from, but the government stopped them from travelling, causing Nora to be in the middle of the fight. When her mother died, her father and her became part of a group called the Medicine Knights to come up with a cure, where her dad and a few others came up with a cure. The cure they created, however, had negative affect on people who were affected by the disease and caused a new breed of creatures.

Cara Johnson is the best friend of Emery Holland. Before going to college, Cara was raised in Savannah, Georgia with her twin brother Carlos when the disease claimed her parents. Alone with her brother at the age of 15, Cara moved to Washington D.C. where she losses her brother in a freak accident. After his death, she wants to be in the fight against the disease, but after meeting Emery, her focus is to make sure nothing wrong happens to her.
