This is a really great short story. Those seem harder and harder to come by these days.
I love the description you used, how the pain was presented to the reader. Also, reading it from the man's point of view is really more effective than a third-person perspective.
The open ending is really great, too. My imagination roamed with that like crazy, and when a story can make me react that way, it's a refreshing feeling.
