Crossing the border...I met a woman from El Salvador once. She has been in America for 30 years. She crossed illegally. She was a single mother in her early 20's. Her son was maybe six years old. After a long ass car ride across Mexico she was dropped of in the middle of nowhere waiting for a truck that would only slow down enough for as many people to jump on as possible...is she didnt make it onto the pick up...she wouldnt make it at all. With the help of a man her and her sun made the jump. Several hours later...still to soon for the sun to be rising and with a throbbing pain in her inner thigh, her and several other were dropped off in the middle of the desert. She walked over 10 hours through the desert with a sleeping 6 year old on her back and what she later found out to be a torn ligament in her left thigh...
30 years later she was a citizen, a bad marriage behind her and three children that, while not very successful, had a much better life than they would have had in El Salvador. Working 40 hours a week cleaning stores. Making enough to be comfortable. Content to see her grandchildren grow, knowing that they would reach even farther than her children had. Never once regretting her decision.
