eh, it's one of those things that you probably wouldn't know unless you've spent some time with SCA fighters, really. There are all kinds of rules regarding fighters and fighting to keep people safe. It's Creative Anachronism, so some creativity is to be expected in various areas.
SCA is unlike groups that recreate various wars and battles where period accuracy in everything is expected or required, like American Civil War re-enactment groups. Which isn't to say that some people don't put a lot of time, effort, and money into being accurate, because there are many who do. But it's not a requirement and for fighting, there are rules that make period accuracy impossible.
psssst, SCA fighters don't carry steel weapons in battles or tourneys. Safety before accuracy! Swords are usually rattan, a kind of bamboo, and covered in duct tape. In fact, most shields are made out of wood as it's lighter and a hell of a lot cheaper than metal. The point is to have fun but avoid serious injury, most fighters practice at most 1-2 hours a week, which is not enough to learn to fight with more accurate/period weapons. Also, anything metal with regards to weaponry or armor is expensive or hard to make. Most fighters start off as poor college kids and pretty much every fighter is responsible for purchasing or making all their own garb and gear.
At least, that's how it was done in the kingdom I lived in.
I DO NOT like Vera! The most self centered woman I've seen since Paulina in Puckface (also a character I loathe). I hope that this is a good thing for Jags and Jalina (I think I spelled this wrong), a homecoming of sorts.
Awesome! I misinterpreted the authors note as saying this was a one shot (in two parts) and thus was done. And I was all, "but, but, nooooo, this was intriguing!" Glad you're going to continue at some point!
