I find Mayella to be a pretty awful person. She's just angry and rude and even though she goes on about people not wanting to be around her, she repels them. I just don't like her attitude. In the first few chapters, she calls some girls sluts. And Tony says that she was "one of the few that didn't care about they wore". What's wrong with caring about your appearance. It's like she's some kind of elitist. And she's totally riding on that "tragic backstory" trope.
