I’m here as the new judge for the ‘That One Story’ contest.
So. I ended up reading this one a couple of times. Mostly because I felt like if I did, I would manage to see all the elements to it. As dark and macabre as it was, I also felt like there was an emotional depth to it that I didn’t want to miss. It also sparked a lot of questions, like how come she had such an intimate affair with Death? Was it all a strange dream? What separated them? Questions, so many questions! (That I’m oddly okay with not having any answers to anyway.)
Your blunt writing style was amazing for this because it had sharp edges whilst maintaining a softness during the points they were together. I loved how you mirrored them with each other in the italicized lines because it added a really beautiful complexity to their relationship, even though I was really only getting a glimpse of them. The way you styled “She won’t. Can’t.” made it weighted and powerful more than anything else. It immediately demanded my attention and you know, my heart. No big deal.
This was definitely a very profound and poetic drabble that I enjoyed immensely.
