So I love WW2, and I loved this right from the summary! The words you use to describe the scene unfolding are really helpful in bringing me into the mind of someone; and the final words being his exact thoughts lead me to wonder what exactly he looked upon. Right when your first chapter starts, I learn something: legal drinking age used to be 18. My favorite part is probably the conversation about family. I feel like there was always such a strong emphasis on family in the past, or at least focus on it in a way that differs from now - especially because it seems a relationship is going to be had between two male characters in a time where that was frowned upon. I'm excited to see where you'll take that, because I've never seen any realistic WW2 pieces involving same-sex/"non-traditional" relationships.
