Sorry for the lateness of my comment - this is for the photo drabble contest!
The reason why you placed first for this contest is quite simple. The way that this was written was so breathtaking and so lovely that from the first time I read it, I couldn't get it out of my mind. I never think about stories after I've read them, but yours stuck in my mind. I also think it's because of the air of realism to it - my condolences to your family! You described grief in a way that wasn't the obvious crying and other things people do when they're sad, it was described in a way that really hits you when you're reading it. For me, it was the constant reminders that he wasn't at the places he was usually at that struck a chord. Though it's obvious that she's in pain and she's struggling, the ending was sweet with her being able to open the window for the first time in a month. It showed that she was going to try, even though she didn't want to.
I have nothing that I can fault with this piece. It was written so effortlessly and though it's saddening to read, it's something that I'll definitely be reading again and again from time to time, because it's that beautiful.
