I don't know, I think Pays was more of the manipulative asshole. Just my insight. I think it's natural to have a bit of jealousy in all of us about someone we like or love, which is what Alex presented. Jealousy doesn't equal asshole. Had he been possessive or controlling, he could have been a grade A ass, but he was in love. He was precieved as the dominate one, but Pays had to control in reality.
I can see how she was playing both, but I don't really see how she was manipulative... Like you said, she actually had the control, which was the irony in the beginning, but Alex was cool with it, he enjoyed it actually, so it's not manipulation. In the end, though, she tried to create some distance and Alex was trying everything to keep her around despite her obviously not wanting to. However, Alex also wasn't possessive or controlling, that's why I said 'borderline abusive' if I amped up the jealousy even further. He was practically bullying Jack so Paisley would get a bad view of him, but it never worked. He thought getting her gifts that would show her how much better her life would be with him would change anything. Although not abusive, he definitely also wasn't just jealous.
