Midnight Runner

Chapter 16: Can't. Stay Away.

My clock started to go off. I turned my head to look at it and it read 6:00am. “Too early!” I shouted throwing a pillow at it to make it shut up. “Paige, wake up!!” Uncle Mark flew open my door screaming. “I’m up, I’m up!” I yelled back throwing my last pillow at him. I laid in bed for five minutes realizing that today was the day. “Uh.” I groaned walking to my closet. Pulling out a white shirt that matched a checkered black and white vest with a blue jean mini skirt and converse to top it off. “I look like a whore.” I said standing in my mirror. “Get rid of the skirt.” I said to myself as I grabbed a pair of my regular faded old blue jeans. “Better.” I said again standing back in the mirror putting my hands on my hips.

“You’re going to be late!” Mark shouted from downstairs. “Shoosh, I’m coming!” I yelled back slinging my black bag over my shoulder and running downstairs. “Do you have everything?” He said trying to stop me before I left. “Yes Uncle Mark but I have to go.” I smiled giving him a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Have fun!” He screamed before I shut the door and ran to my car. I took a deep and relaxing breath before I backed out of the driveway.

Everything hurt. Just two days ago I was with Jacob and now I have to forget about him like he was nothing. How can he expect me to do that? How can he be like that? Why do I like him? Why do I need him? All these questions popped up in my head and I couldn’t answer a single one of them and right now the only possible I friend I have is Seth. My heart started beating fast and my head sunk. I had the perfect idea, I could just wreck my car or drown and no one would care I was meant to die. After moments of going through the ways to kill myself I had to shake the thought from my head and try to live my life.

I pulled up in front of the school, turning off my ignition and sitting there for the perfect time to get out. “Hey!” Jared said slapping my windshield trying to scare me. “Uh, hey.” I grinned getting out of the car. “First day of public high school.” He laughed putting an arm around my shoulder. “Are you excited?” Jared smiled waving at people who passed us. “No actually I’m kind of nervous.” I smiled showing him my hand and how much it was shaking. “Oh dang girl!” Jared laughed looking at my hand. “It will be fine, you have some classes with us.” Jared sparkled from ear to ear. He was having a good day.

The day was good so far until gym class rolled around.

I walked out of the girl’s locker room noticing that my class was all girls and we shared the gym with another class full of all boys, and the whole pack including Jacob was in that class. I sighed looking away as I walked over to my assigned spot. The teacher ushered me over to stand by him. “Every one this is Paige Wilkins and she will be joining us today!” He yelled right in my ear and continued. “Today we will be playing volleyball!” He yelled again leading me over to a group of preppy girls. “Ladies she will be on your team today since Mary is gone.” He smiled pushing me over to them. “Hi.” I smiled kindly. “Oh great, she probably sucks.” A girl said with blonde hair, walking off with the others not even knowing my existence. Sighing I walked behind them getting into my spot, which was the serving spot. “Crap.” I murmured to myself looking over to see all of the pack looking at me including Jacob. “Thanks for the pressure.” I whispered to myself again before one of the girls shot the ball in my direction. I caught the ball and stood my stance and put my hand in the ready. Serving the ball was easy but hitting the ball was hard.

I served the ball and won our side a point and when I turned to the girls they looked at me with amazement. I served the ball again winning another point but on the third one someone was able to hit it. We went back and forth with the ball I had hit the last time. One of the girls on my team distracted me and the ball flung over to me hitting me in the side of the head.

Paige hit the ground as the teacher and the classmates ran to her side. Jacob stood up looking as he was getting ready to run over there but stopped himself and sat back down again. “Jake, we know you can’t keep not being with her.” Quil said looking at him. “It’s better this way.” Jacob said still looking over at the accident. “You sound exactly like that stupid bloodsucker.” Paul said standing up and jumping off the bleachers they were sitting on. “How dare you say that!” Jacob yelled standing up and looking down at Paul who stood on the ground below him. “Well it’s true, you know what Seth told me?” Paul said glaring at Jacob. “He said for once in his life when he looked at Paige he saw only sadness and hurt.” Paul glared even more. “You did that Jake.” He finished before he walked off.

I opened my eyes to see people standing in a circle around me. “You okay Paige!” The gym teacher said helping me off the ground. “Not really I feel somewhat dizzy.” I said putting my hand on my head. “Alright well let’s sit you out for the rest of gym.” He smiled grabbing my right arm and leading my over to the bleachers where I saw Jacob sitting. “Tell me when you feel better to be back in the game.” He smiled to me again before walking off. I sat down on the bottom bleacher still trying to keep my eyes off of Jacob and or the others. “Ow.” I rubbed my head again still feeling light headed and sick to my stomach.

The feeling in my head didn’t go away but it made my dizziness worse and it made me feel as if I was going to pass out. Jacob wasn’t looking at me anymore because the eyes I felt when I sat down had wondered away. I put my head between my legs trying to stop the spinning…but nothing it just kept getting worse. I opened my eyes again to the bright lights above and it went dark.

Paige had passed out and fell off the bleachers. “Paige!” Jacob shouted getting up and running to her side and lifting her up. “Is she okay?” Embry asked walking over there. “I’m taking her to the nurse!” He shouted again walking rather fast. “Yup, he loves her to much.” Embry laughed turning to the others. “Jacob trying to stay away from Paige, it’s like a balloon without air.” Jared smiled back watching Jacob disappear out of the gym room.

“Who can stay away from you?” Jacob asked himself as he held herd in his arms. “Your to troublesome. I’ve had to save you over 10 times.” Jacob kept talking to himself until he reached the nurses office where the nurse stood. “Oh my what happened?” She showed Jacob to a bed to put her down. “Well she got hit in the head with a volleyball and when she went to go sit down she passed out.” Jacob said still looking at Paige. “That’s happened before, no worries.” The nurse laughed.
