Green Eyes

Two weeks later…

Lying on my bed, I played with my hair, thinking. I sighed. Kaylee and I still weren’t any closer to figuring out what Brian was up to. For the past two weeks, every time I went over there he would be shut off from the others, staring into space. To be perfectly honest, I wanted to walk up to him and slap him in the face. It was hurting me that he never talked to me anymore. We were such great friends and I loved being around him, now he would barely look at me.

My phone sounded and I walked over to where it was sitting. I had one new message from Maddy.

Hey girl! I’m bored. Mind if I walk over to your house?

Hitting reply, I sat myself back down on my bed.

Me too. Yup that’s fine :)

Hitting send, I sighed and laid back down, resting my head on my pillow. Hopefully Maddy would take my mind off things.

I started playing with the corner of my pillow, passing time until Maddy got here. I felt my eyes begin to droop and I fought to keep them open. The last thing I needed was one of Maddy’s awakenings. She made sure to make them painful and humiliating.

My mind drifted to Zacky, with his black hair and gorgeous eyes. God I missed him. And it had been, what, 4 hours since I’d last seen him? Wow, that’s pathetic.

I rolled over and snuggled into the pillow, pulling my blankets up for warmth. Why was I so tired? My eyelids began to droop again and I found I was too weak to fight it. I decided I’d rest until Maddy got here.

With that, my eyelids fluttered closed and I drifted into a dreamless sleep.

‘KAYLA! YOO HOO! Jeez this is harder than I thought.’

I felt myself bouncing up and down and I reluctantly opened my eyes. Screaming when my eyes met a pair of grey ones, I leapt from the bed and onto the floor, hitting my head in the process.

I heard laughter and I looked up to see Maddy grinning madly at me. ‘Wow, each time I do it your reaction gets better and better.’

Yeah, I thought, that’s probably because my life has gotten a lot scarier since you last did that.

I got up from the floor and walked over to Maddy, slapping her across the head. I hate being woken up from sleeping.

Her eyes widened and she walked over to me, punching me on my arm. ‘Owww! Jeez Maddy that hurt!’

She laughed and nodded. ‘Well don’t expect me to not defend myself.’

I cursed and glared at her. ‘If that bruises, I’m gonna get my boyfriend on you.’

I laughed to myself. Yeah that’s right, fear the rath of my vampire boyfriend.

She grinned widely. ‘Hey, bring him on! I’d like to see his face when he gets beaten by a girl.’

I shook my head, smiling in amusement. ‘Good luck with that Maddy.’

She scoffed and turned away, throwing herself onto my bed. ‘So, Kayla, how is this boyfriend of yours?’

I smiled, thinking of Zacky. She gasped. ‘Oooo, someone’s in love!’

I laughed again, this time out loud. Yeah, if she knew the half of it…

I looked up at her to see her eyes open wide in expectation. I decided I’d annoy her for a bit. ‘Yeah he’s good. We’ve been getting on pretty well.’

Maddy frowned at me. ‘That’s it? That’s all you’re going to give me?’

I laughed and nodded. She stuck her finger up at me and poked her tongue out. ‘Do I at least get to meet him?’

Oh. There was a tough question. What would Zacky think? I shrugged. ‘We’ll see how it goes.’

She smiled and nodded. ‘Hey, I was thinking this morning…’

I opened my mouth and eyes really wide and gasped. ‘You can do that? Teach me how!’

She stuck her finger up again and I laughed. ‘Anyways, I was thinking and, what ever happened to that Sammi girl? She just like, disappeared. The others have been asking me about it.’

I shrugged. ‘I dunno. I haven’t seen her since she walked me home.’ Liar. But seriously, what was I supposed to say? Oh, Maddy, she’s a vampire spy for me and my boyfriend from an evil clan of vampires that are trying to capture me? She’d probably lock me in a mental asylum.

She frowned. How could she always tell when I was lying? She shrugged to herself and I sighed in relief. ‘I don’t really care though. I didn’t like her.’

I laughed and nodded, remembering how Maddy had treated Sammi when we went shopping. ‘I think you made that pretty clear when we went out shopping.’

She laughed along with me. ‘Hey, if I don’t like someone there’s no way I’m gonna pretend I do.’

She got up and walked over to my desk, taking her jacket off and throwing it on top. She turned around and sat back down. ‘So… Kayla… you happen to have any food in that ever-so-fine cupboard of yours?’

I chuckled and nodded, heading out the door and downstairs.

Two hours later…

‘Go go go! Stupid dumb controller!’

‘Wooo!’

‘Screw you Kayla, screw you.’

I laughed and quickly typed my initials into the high scores before turning to face Maddy. ‘What now?’

Maddy put on her thinking face and stroked her chin with her thumb.

Kayla – we’re coming to get you. Get your parents and wait at the front door. Quickly.

My eyes widened. What was happening now? My heart started racing as I turned to look at Maddy, who was staring at me, confusion written all over her face.

‘Maddy, you better go. Something’s come up.’

She frowned at me. ‘What? Kayla, you can tell me. What’s happened?’

I sighed. ‘I don’t know yet. I’ll explain later. Just please hurry home.’

She sighed and nodded, hugging me quickly before walking out the door. That’s what I loved about Maddy – she knew when to take me seriously.

I ran upstairs and into my parent’s bedroom, to see them sitting on the bed, mum reading the newspaper and dad on his laptop. Dad looked up at me. ‘What’s up Kayla?’

I guess the panic was written all over my face, because my dad set his laptop down and walked over to me. ‘Mum, dad, we have to go wait at the front door for Zacky. Something’s happening.’

There was a knock at the door and we all looked at each other, before I ran downstairs. I opened the door to come face to face with an extremely anxious looking Zacky. He grabbed my hand and pulled me outside, my parents quickly following. I looked up at Zacky, who was leading me to his car. ‘Zacky, what’s happening?’

Zacky looked down at me briefly, before opening the door to his car and pushing me in. ‘They’re coming. We need to get you out of here.’

My parents got in the back and Zacky got in the front, starting the engine. He zoomed off in a direction I did not recognise, eyes glaring angrily at the road.

I glanced back at my parents, and I noticed they were in a hushed conversation. My heart was beating erratically, and I tried to concentrate on where we were going. Why did this have to happen now? We had gone two whole weeks without something happening, so why now? Couldn’t they just give us a break?

I sighed and looked back at Zacky, before looking back out the window. We were speeding rapidly down the road, surrounded by trees.

We continued to drive in silence, and I noticed it was getting dark outside. The moon was out and it was creating an eerie presence, and somehow it made my anxiety worse.

I was snapped out of my thoughts when the car stopped, and Zacky got out of the car. I took a deep breath and opened my door, stepping into the darkness.

Mum and dad got out of the car too, and we all stood outside, waiting for something to happen. Another two cars pulled up and all the guys got out, as well as Kayla and Sammi. I narrowed my eyes at Sammi, who I noticed appeared very nervous.

Deciding I couldn’t wait any longer, I walked over to Zacky and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned around, smiling slightly when he saw me. ‘Zacky, what’s going on?’

He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. ‘Sammi came earlier to tell us that Vercro was planning on ambushing your house tonight. We came as quickly as we could.’

I looked down, but he placed his thumb under my chin and lifted my head up, kissing me lightly on the lips. I smiled at him and he smiled back, threading his fingers through mine. ‘You’ve got to admit, it is lucky Sammi came to us.’

I sighed and nodded. ‘Yeah I guess. Whatever she’s planning…’

Zacky sighed and shook his head. ‘I thought you said you could trust her?’

I looked down. ‘People have to earn my trust.’

He nodded and pulled me over to where the others were standing, caught up in a conversation with my parents. Kaylee looked up at me and smiled. Jimmy walked over and picked me up and I yelped in response. ‘Jimmy put me down!’

Jimmy laughed and threw me in the air, causing me to scream. He caught me just as I was about to hit the ground and I scowled at him, blowing my hair out of my face.

‘Jimmy put my girlfriend down.’ Jimmy pouted and placed me on the floor. I heard someone growl and I looked over to see Johnny kicking the rocks with his feet, a frown on his face. I sighed and frowned. How could he be worried about that now?

Suddenly there was a loud scream. All of our eyes widened, and we looked in the direction it came from.

‘HELP!’

Everyone looked startled. Well, all except for me. I was running towards the car as quickly as I could. I knew that voice. Maddy.
