That Should Be Me

I swear tonight was the best night of my life since I left. I missed her so damn much. We were walking on the shore line of the beach walking side by side. Both laughing at our forgotten memories.

"Hey I'll race you" D said to me

"You're on"

We ran down the beach and I crashed into her and fell on top of her.

"Hello" I said with a smirk

"Hi." she said softly

"God, I missed you.." I told her and she smiled

"I missed you too." she said back to me.

" You know I never wanted to leave D... "

"Then why did you? You wanted to go to Colorado and you loved your car and you could not wait to..." I cut her off

"So what if I loved the car, I was in love with you! A car is worthless to me when I have you" I told her

"Nick"

"And yes, I did want to go to Colorado. Why didn't you just come with me?" I asked her

"Because I had a year of high school left! And I knew you liked Cassidy. I didn't want to get in the way of that!" She scoffed

"D, you were my girlfriend! Why the hell would you just hand me off to some other girl?"

She turned away from me, she seemed upset.

"Hey, look at me" I told her.

She was crying

"You seemed unhappy Nick so I let you go"

My heart dropped into my stomach

"You thought I was unhappy with you?" I frowned

"I didn't think you were unhappy, I knew you were."

"I was the happiest guy ever, and you... do you hate me?" I asked her

"No"

I exhaled loudly

"Well, I should probably start going, I should go meet Ricky and-" I kissed her mid sentence.

And that was a terrible idea.

She put her hands on my chest and pushed me away.

"Nick, we had a chance, one chance. All we get is one chance"

My best day turned into my worst day. I got off of her

"One chance?"

"Yes" She got up and started to walk away

"D," I called out "Everybody deserves a second chance"
